Engine Oil for the track
The owners manual recommends using 0W-40 or 5W-40 for the track (vs. 5W-30 recommended stock).
1. Which oil manufacturer / model would you use? 2. Which one is better 0W-40 or 5W-40 ? Some of these models keep saying "European cars". Thanks

Which oil is "better" can be very controversial discussion.
Me personally, I would use any reputable name brands and won't worry about it too much. (Mobil, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Amsoil, Motul, maybe Royal Purple....) I see you moved to 3800 status yesterday - Congrats!! Have fun with your car on track when it comes in. Gen6 is amazing!

The manual says any Dexos2 oil, 5W40 or 0W40 are both fine.
Id find which ever oil has the highest hths. Some people are seeing temps as high as 270F which makes oil thin at that temp which is interesting so you definitely want to be running 40wt for tracking. Now which Dexos2 oil is best thats entirely a different question an oils PDS and specs would have to be analyzed to choose one that may be better than another. My rule of thumb for track use is recommended weight and recommended brand. In this case, the weight would depend on the season where you're at and outside temp. Heavier weight oil on the hot days in the summer. Lighter oil in spring and fall. Most important is to change your oil often. Monitor the oil temps while your running. Definitely take your time on the cool down lap and maybe let it idle a bit before shutting down. I also pop the hood once I pull back into the pits.
If your running synthetic in the car regularly, then I suggest running the same brand synthetic oil. Some synthetics oils do not like to be mixed. Not an issue if you're running dino for either daily or track. You can mix synthetic and dino without issues. |

crap. I read 5w30 when I was reading the manual, but I bet you're right that it says 5w40 dexos2. I asked the service guy if the stuff in the car currently was dexos2 and he said it was. probably not the case. looks like i'll be doing an oil change myself, I don't want to overheat out there. won't be a big deal at least.
the service guy said the current oil is a 50/50 blend of synthetic/conventional. safe to say every will be going full synthetic? |

it's like they don't want you to change your own oil haha. This is a BMW type trick. |

Dexos2 is described as: " Specifically designed to meet the needs of GM diesel engines" . I have a feeling this is why we can't find the right oil. You mentioned Castrol Edge - their diesel oil is certified Dexos2 - http://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/88FB7D0788A68F2580257E2D004F5207/$File/BPXE-9VX5VU.pdf This is the only spec that I could find with Dexos2. Is it the right oil? I DO NOT KNOW

Correct, but the owners manual says that if you track your Camaro SS you should switch to Dexos2 5W-40 or 0W-40
