Thoughts on Tires for Daily-Driven 1LE?

Hi guys, I'm right around the corner from pulling the trigger on an '18 1SS 1LE after selling my previous 1SS earlier this year, I'm very excited about it. I intend to daily drive the car despite the track focus. I'm coming from a bolt-on C6 Z06 so I didn't want to come too far down in performance, hence the choice of the 1LE(that and the styling is just unbeatable).

A concern I have are tires though. I know this isn't necessarily the car to worry about a big tire shop bill but I want to find a way to soften the blow. I live in Oregon and as you may know, it rains 80% of the year. I have heard reports of the GY tires from the factory lasting less than 5000 miles in some cases, a tire bill of $600+ before the first oil change is a sobering thought

That said I am interested in some thoughts as to a reliable set of tires that will fit the wheels reasonably well after the initial set gives up the ghost; I have had my eye on BFG g-Force Comp-2 A/S in particular so if anyone has experience with them I'd love to hear about it. Now, I want to put the question out there: which 285 tire would you recommend for an 11" rim? Or would you recommend going another direction?

I am looking to replace my OEM tires since I do have to drive to work on occasion and having minimum anti-hydroplane properties due to low tread depth and not rolling the car below 30-40 degrees without cracking the tires is limiting when I can drive. I am really focused on the Michelin Pilot 4S. They are still summer tires but have excellent wet traction and are more forgiving at lower temperatures.

Not sure there is much out there that will fit our wheels under $1300ish for all 4....

Or just find some standard SS wheels - plenty of tire choices there.

That's if you don't mind having two sets of wheels/tires.

If you plan on keeping both sets of tires (daily drivers and track) then the cost of mounting and balancing could eventually exceed the cost of a second set of wheels. If you buy standard SS factory size wheels then you have more options and the tire prices are generally lower. If your daily driver tires need to run in freezing weather on frost, snow, or ice then you might consider all-season radials or winter tires.

I don't really want to keep two sets of wheels around, to be honest. I'm hoping to find a good 285 tire that will fit on the 11" rear wheel. Something with better treadwear than what you will find on the stock GYs that is also acceptable in the rain.

I would recommend looking at the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 or Continental ExtremeContact Sport in 295/30/20.

I run PS4S on a second set of wheels. Good tire, but not super cheap either.

The PS4S are a great choice for a replacement but have the same temperature limits (confirmed by Michelin) as the Goodyears that are on our 1LE, probably true for all summer only tires. If you really want/need to drive it all year round and you live were temps go below 40, your're probably going to have to go to an all season tire or not drive on those days. I had to drive my 1LE the other day and it was 38-40 and dry, I had no issues, driving it carefully. Tread cracking can happen when temps hit 20 and below per the manuals. For me I have a DD I will use for cold and bad weather days equipped with Continental's Extreme Contact DWS06.

All seasons suck pretty much all season, they are nowhere near a good winter tire and then mediocre in the summer, perhaps fun if you like breaking loose all the time. I can't stress enough how crappy all-seasons are on ice and snow and how much different winter tires are. I live in a place that gets snow and ice and cold temps where winter tires make sense and while a few people choose (dangerously) to drive on all-seasons, most responsible people run studded winter tires, or if they have very heavy vehicles, just winter tires. Straight winter tires work ok here, but you have to know the limitations and still be careful. On the other hand, it's a perfect excuse to have a separate set of summer tires, and true summer tires are a joy in the summer, so it's better to have the best of both worlds IME than poor performance all around.

I wouldn't recommend a 285 on an 11" wheel. Too much stretch, and you will lose most of your sidewall flex. A 295 would do ok, OE 305 would be better. The Michelins will do great for you as long as you don't do much driving below 40F. A good all season is a compromise is all conditions, but if your'e looking for a cheaper, longer lasting tire, They might be your only option if you occasionally must drive in light snow conditions. Even then, the typical all season tire would only be good for no more than two winters. You would be severely disappointed in them for any type of performance driving though. The fact that you're driving a 1LE would make up for some of that.

Michelin AS3+ for my winter tires and they are working nicely. They are a compromise tire as every all season tire is but after all its an all season tire. It grips 1000 times better than the oe tires at 40 degrees.

I have some Nitto N555's in the back (305) and Bridgestone Potenza (275) front that do ok. They're still ultra performance tires but they have way deeper tread depth than oem's. They do ok,they have decent traction and they're way cheaper.
