New Exhaust Law
Hi All,
Wondering how the new exhaust volume law is going to effect us in NY. I have a 2ss and am a bit worried about the huge fines. Anyone know we will be grandfathered in or how it's going to work. Thanks, Matt

Knowing Cuomo, you'll get ****ed and not grandfathered in, but hopefully I'm just being overly pessimistic.

I'm worried also as my Zl1 is not stock and pretty loud, but not to worry as police officers would have to be trained to use a DB meter and also how to set it up correctly for the distance if not how are they going to prove that your exhaust is to loud to give you a ticket.

If your car is stock then I wouldn't worry about it.
If it's anything like Canucksland, then they fine you, you go to some kind of inspection garage to get it sound tested, then go to a small claims court against the cop that fined you. You will end up with the money you paid to get the car inspected and probably some for wasted time.

Even if the police don't get you, exhaust system checks will be part of NYS inspection, If it is not factory, modified at all, you will fail.
Factory, no worry. |

I hope they do it where I live. Some modded cars especially non-V8s are so loud and awful sounding and disruptive when people are outside eating...etc. I hope every one of them gets fined eventually even though doubtful.

You can still do exhaust, just realize there is risk. I'm curious how aggressive SCPD will be with this. Some STUPID loud cars around here, make wide open NPP sound like a damn Prius! lol This will make the usual summer checkpoint stops a lot more interesting around here, too. |

So how loud exactly is the NY noise limit?
My NPP is decently loud and tracks have noise limits. Never got in trouble over there. The noise limit at the track is 95 dB. Is the NY one lower?

No, it is a 95 dB limit, only an issue if you modified though. People all getting bent about it, not a big thing really, unless your car is obnoxiously loud, like setting off every alarm on the block loud, then good, get the damn ticket!
Fines could be as much as $1000 per violation. |

Fines $150-$1000 but the inpsection shops should beware as well:
"The bill will also require the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles to deny or revoke a license to operate a vehicle inspection business upon a third or subsequent willful violation of regulations regarding mufflers within an 18-month period." Yes, I expect they will be out hunting for revenue......inspections shops will be scrutinized. This will get interesting around here for sure. |

Looks like I’ll be adding the resonator to my exhaust lol. If you have a cat back or axle back and still meet noise requirements there shouldn’t be a problem but who knows. What is the distance and rpm this 95db will be measured at ?
