Cabin filter

I just bought a 2017 ZL1 a few weeks ago.
Been going thru everything.
Today I replaced the in cabin filter (which was bitch getting the glove box down LOL).
This was the filter and the clump of stuff above it!!!
I'm gonna assume this grey stuff isn't part of the Camaro!!
Looks like a critter spent his winter in there.

Looks like material from the carpet underlayment/sound deadener being used as a mouse nest.

Did it smell in there? This scares me, my car has been in hibernation mode. I hate it

The guy I bought it from lived in the sticks. I think it was stored in an open barn type building.
I think a mouse too.
It did not smell at all.
Could’ve been from the winter before for all I know.
It’s going in Friday for a full detail and coating then will be in my garage where there 100% are no critters.
Where is the incoming vent for the cabin for these?

I think it's in the cowl, on the passenger's side. Ugh... That sucks...

I'd inspect for chewed wiring in the engine compartment.

That is rodent work for sure. Mice have used sound insulation material to make a nest.

Fortunately, the ZL1 doesn't have a plastic engine cover, another common location for mice to make nests. That happened to my Gen5 SS the year I had to park it outside during garage renovation.

But you do need to remove the engine air filter to check for activity there. One year, I found about a quart of acorns in the air box of my Gen5 SS. Now, it's an annual routine to check there.

I'm just curious as to how (or where) the sound insulation came from? The filter wasn't chewed the whole way thru. And this was on top of the filter (from the air side not the filtered side). It seems odd the air wouldn't be funneled directly to the filter?
Also, there was just the one clump, I just took 2 pictures of the same clump.

I have Roto Fab air box so nothing in there.

I had this happen with my 2015 GMC Terrain when I lived in upstate NY. The insulation came from behind the passenger kick panel. You could see it all torn up looking into end of fender from the door jamb. The issue came up on an August road trip with temps about 90 and the AC wasn't putting out cold air. After we stopped for lunch I pulled the glove box and the filter was chewed up like yours and the whole area packed full of insulation like that. Cleaned it all out and AC was fine after that. NY was a horrible place for critters (and taxes). One time I pulled the engine cover and the little bastards even stored nuts on the intake. This was a car that wasn't garaged and was driven everyday. Never any issues with vehicles in the garage.

I've heard dryer sheets (in vents, exhaust tips, engine compartment, etc.) and mothballs (under the car) ward off rodents. I'm hoping this is the case since that's what I'm using in my garage while my Camaro sleeps for the winter.

Well, that and a housecat
