Rusted out shocks on 2002 Dodge Ram
Recently my father in law brought me his plow truck to fix it up for him before next winter. He said the drivers side makes some noise at full turn. I looked behind the drivers side wheel and saw something I have never seen before. The shock was so rusted out that the lower part is gone! I mean rusted and crumbled away. It is just a spring now!
I opened the hood and the mount for the shock is just as rusted. My concern is that when I go to remove the old shock the whole assembly will just crumble. I am thinking of having a welder fab me a plate to mount the shock to, but there probably isn’t a section of good frame to weld it to. He does not want to scrap it, and can’t afford a replacement (retired). Ideas?

You may be able to purchase a replacement shock mount. If need be. You may also have to beef up that area of the frame with some new steel.

thats insane!!
i think the only way your going to get the old shock top nut off is going to be to cut it. Hows the lower mounting point look? unfortunately, i think its only a matter of time before hes going to need to replace the truck. As im sure you know (and would agree) theres going to be a point where the cost and time to replace/fix, is going to be beyond the worth of the truck.

By the looks of the amount of rust I would just haul it to the scrap yard for what ever amount of money you can get for scrap and call it a day, this looks like a never ending money pit of repairs.
