Taking the PCH from LA to SF

We are taking our 2018 SS on our first road trip. We are taking Highway 1. I know its closed by Big Sur. We want to enjoy as much of PCH as possible. Does anyone know about any details of the detour around Big Sur?

Thank you.

Here's my recommendation: follow SR1 up the coast to Harmony, CA, then detour east on SR46 to HWY 101. Go north to Bradley and take G18 west (Jolon Rd). Go Past Lockwood to Jolon. Turn left onto Mission Rd. You will see numerous live fire ranges on your left as you drive down Mission Rd.

You will be entering Fort Hunter Liggett Army base. You won't have to stop at the gates as they are usually unmanned, but just be aware that Military Police do patrol there. At Nacimiento Ferguson Rd. turn left and cross the one lane tressell bridge.

This road will lead you back out of the base and up over the Coastal Range mountains. The road is paved the entire way, but is narrow and very twisty! It's a spectacular approach to the Big Sur coast. It's also the only way in and out of Big Sur from the south at the moment due to the slide, so it's busier than usual. Last week when i came through there at 7am i encountered 100 or more Porsches and other Barvarian motors headed at speed towards the coast. I also interrupted an amatuer porn shoot, encountered a Forest Service fire truck, and was nearly taken out by a pickup in a blind curve. Enjoy!
