Ice mode
100% ice mode situation.Same thing happened to me when i stacked my Z28 last year.
Panic braking gave me **** all, under my pedal.Considering i was doing under 30mph,another braking mode might of saved my insurance company a £25000 repair bill. |

ICE mode ? This sounds like a bug to me... I mean, every other ABS that I have every owned stops you from locking up the tires and pulsates the brakes quickly to allow you to stop while still slowly rotating the tires so they will not lock up.... Why would ice mode not apply any braking power until you take your foot off the pedal and put it back on ? sounds like something is not right...

The loss of vacuum in your brake booster would cause your brake pedal to become excessively hard to press down. Happened to my 4th gen z28 and I assume both brake systems work around the same concept. Hopefully not too much damage and mostly cosmetic and not engine or structural. by back from insurance and fix it if you plan to keep for the long haul.

I had an experience with the ABS going into ICE mode. I did a panic stop from about 15mph and there was lots of gravel in the intersection. When it happened the pedal didn't move and the car didn't want to stop but I was totally aware of what was happening and there was feedback coming from the pedal and I could hear the ABS pump cycling.

I have not had any work done recently. The car was in the dealer a few weeks before for a rear end/drive line noise. what I felt sounds like the ice mode. I live in Miami Florida no ice here!!! It was super scary no brakes at all. Then the burning smell of the air bag deployment with two friends in the car. I had never been in a car where the air bags deployed. It smells like burning material. I thought the car was catching on fire with my friends inside the car. Thank God the doors opened with no issues and we got out right away. It was super scary. I will keep you guys updated. Thank you for the feedback.

OP - so sorry... that sounds like it was an intense experience. As others have said glad everyone escaped unscathed. I've driven my car in the wet, cold, etc (even w/ Trofeos) and never experienced anything close to what you described. Also, I never burnished my brakes because I don't track mine. I've done plenty of hard stops and never had an issue. Ice Mode sounds like a flawed design. Keep us posted on what GM has to say.

Man, what a bummer! Glad you and your friends are ok, but damn. That's some scary shit. Hope everything works out and you get another Z/28.

I had this happen to me after I went through a touch-less car wash.(just need to get the dust off before a evening show)
Drove through the gas station parking lot at normal speed and applied the brakes and nothing.......solid pedal feel and could hear the ABS. I just though it was soap/residue. guess it was ICE mode. Funny they have ice mode on a car that comes with tires that aren't usable under 10 degree Celsius. |

Wow! Just glad no one was injured as mechanical things can be replaced.
I had never heard of this "Ice Mode" before and wondering what engineering positive thing is it supposed to do in what situations. Is this engineering marvel (?) on other GM vehicles?

" ICE mode " is not programmed or engineered in to the ABS system by the manufacturer, it is just a term used to describe this condition. Basically the ABS is working too fast for the wheel to regain any traction, this may be more evident on a car like the Z/28 because of the powerful brakes and initial bite but it can happen in any car, mostly in slippery conditions therefore the name ICE mode.
