I agree that changing the oil at 500 miles has nothing to do with the oil itself is going bad. It's to get rid of any metal that might be there due to the break in wear of the engine.

it's free so it's silly to not have it done (especially since they are recommending it).

I see that for 2018 they recommend 500 mile oil change which differs from my 2017. Sure there is always metal flakes in a new engine, but they mainly will settle to the bottom and stay. Sure if you takes sharp corners and sling the oil around sharply you might suck up a few and then go in the oil filter. But when the car sits overnight for one time, those particles are on the bottom of the pan.

My ZL1 was at Sebring doing hot laps with 400 miles on the clock. All I did was change the oil to the track specified Dexos2. I just drove it on the street for a week straight to break in the clutch and brakes before hand.

Post back at 50k. If all is well, you know better than the engineers at GM.

Seriously though, these safeguards are set for a reason.

2017 ZL1. Followed the break-in pretty much to a T, with an extra oil change:
-majority city driving first 1500miles
-no high revs until 1500miles
-few high load pulls early to ensure rings are set
-oil change at 500miles
-oil change at 1500miles

First oil change 500 miles.
2nd at 1500.
3rd at 3000 miles
Then I haven't decided.

I do 500, 1,500, 5,000, then every 5k from there. Always worked well and I get the junk out! Never have to worry about forgetting oil change miles. It's on every 5k

Oh, and diff at 1,500 too lol

Did that on the SS 1LE, and will do the same on the ZL1 1LE!

I believe this is a reasonable approach, if one does not track the car, in that case I would follow those recommendations.

My dealer told me that the 500mile oil change was only for the Z06. The the wet sump and dry were different
They did not change my oil till 5000 miles.

Correct, dry sump only .../And it's not to get rid of manufacturing debris, it's because the dry sump system is put together with a sealant that can foam the oil at high rpm and from then Oil backs up into the air intake system. Oil change solved that , it been written on the c7 boards for a couple years:

definition of "strayed" may be disputed, but I had it at the road course with 1510 on the clock and all of the fluids had been changed according to GM supplement. First oil change at 500 miles and then according to the amount of track duty. A few max rpm runs here and there to "seat the rings".

I did my first one at 1500 simply because I got a pretty early release 17 & took possession in March when they started touching down & then they added the 500 recommendation afterwards which I think was mentioned here. Did it myself at my mechanic's place.

Did the 2nd at around 3k only because I was at the dealer for a tire issue & figured it was free...they stated they would do it, but FIRST change wasn't needed till 5k. Told then it was actually the 2nd & they looked at me like I was nuts.
