Thank you for chiming in.

I agree, I wrote the article quite a while ago and I realize we learn more and more as things evolve.

Nothing is carved in stone it is simply a guide to help newbies get they're head wrapped around the concept.

I did specify Modified engines will likely not be able to run E-85 without fuel system upgrades, The level of modification varies.

I am sure with the power your making you have found the limits of the LT-1 fuel components.

With your input I can certainly edit the guide.

Most all of the stuff we do is FI.

Ted.

Ted, Do you see a point of diminishing returns in making power as ethanol content level rises? For example, my car made 526/481 on 62%, so is it logical to think there is a bit more there at lets say 80% E?

I have experienced it both ways, if the build warrants the higher octane it continues to gain power as the content is increased.

If not you will find diminishing returns.

The last car I did made the same power with E-60 or E-80

I expect if I added more boost when I moved to E-80 it would have needed the extra octane.

Ted,
Having seen this question so figured I’d ask. How good is e-85 and methanol. Right now I’m running 100% meth and 93 with my whipple it’s going to get all the fuel upgrades and e85 plus cam etc so just wondering your opinion
Thanks

I don't have any experience with Meth on top of E-85 so I may not be the best source for this.

My personal preference is to put the fuel through the injectors rather than a supplemental meth system.

If you are switching to E-85 I feel the benefit of Meth injection diminishes, unless of coarse you have no intercooler or super high IAT.

Hello I know it's been a while but I just traded in my 2016 2SS RS 1LE and I bought my 2018 ZL1 1LE thinking about the conversion. Plus Roto Fab CAI, and pulley 2.30 is the fuel pump in it big enough to run E85 is it worth doing it.

Thanks
Bill

Congrats Bill, I have the same car.

No sir you can not run E-85 with a pulley without significant fuel system upgrades.

Leave the pulley off and you can run E-fuels

Yes you will need 2 tunes one for stock and one for modified.

And Flex should be ok? What hp should she do at the wheels?

You said 2 tunes? So if I take it off is there a handheld like my predator that aloud me to put it back to stock?

Bringing this back up...

Does anyone have screenshots of the user defined PID’s in the Torque/OBD Fusion app for ethanol?

Thanks in advance
Please let me know if my user created PID is correct

There seems to be a lot of misinformation regarding this so I am starting this thread to hopefully educate and put to rest some of the misinformation.

Somehow people are getting the impression you can purchase and install a sensor and you're good to go, NOT the case at all.

Q. Can I add a flex fuel sensor to my car?

A. Yes, you can but it will do nothing without custom tuning to activate it.

Q. OK after the flex fuel sensor can I burn E-85?

A. Yes and no, If all Stock Yes, if modified NO, you do not have large enough injectors or fuel pump to supply the 30% more fuel volume needed.

Q. What is required to burn E-85 in my supercharged Camaro?

A. That will depend on RWHP target, Example, for up to 500 RWHP you could get away with stock fuel system, flex fuel sensor and custom tuning.

A2. For modified vehicles, i.e Heads cam or Supercharger, an LT-4 High pressure fuel pump, LT4 injectors, ZL-1 in tank pump, a Flex fuel sensor, and custom tuning.

Q. How much more power an I expect from E-85?

A. This is a loaded question, again it will depend on how extensive your mods are now and how badly you need more octane.

A2. Example 1, 770 RWHP 93 oct combo makes 850 RWHP on E-74, total 80 RWHP gain

A3. Example 2, 630 RWHP 93 oct combo makes 685 RWHP on E-68, total 55 RWHP gain

Q. What is E-85, E74, E68?

A. It is the percentage of Ethanol vs Gasoline in the mixture, when you buy E-85 you don't always get E-85 you often get E-74.

Q. How do you know this?

A. The Flex fuel sensor reports this to the computer and can be logged or read through the OBDii port.

Q. With a complete flex fuel conversion can I switch between 93 and E-85

A. Yes you can when setup correctly the computer will compensate for the Stoich value and timing requirements.

Q. What needs to be done to the tune to enable Flex fuel capability?

A. A full custom tune must be made on the dyno first on 93 then enable the flex fuel sensor, the flex fuel timing and fueling tables must be set up as they are currently all Zeros.

I will be happy to add to this thread with anyone's additional questions, these are the most common I have been getting.

Ted.
I have gotten all kinds of answers to this question. For a lt4 ZL1 are you able to run full e85 like the SS. With a flex fuel sensor, external fuel pump, CAI, pulley, headers/exhaust. Some people say thats what i need some people say i dont need a external fuel pump(rarest answer) and some say i need new injectors with the external fuel pump. Anyone please help

This should help answer your questions if not ask away.
