Does the M6 gearbox swap out?

I have a 400HP LGT I4 2T. With the stock M6 Trans the driving experience is more like a 3 cyl Geo if you get my meaning. The gearing now seems just too high. I was looking at the TR3160 versions and ATS is slightly lower gearing and Gt350 is a lot lower. First question, Does the gear box swap out easily? Like is the boltup and shaft strictly a 'universal' Tremec design?

Second question, if all that is out there at the moment is a new TR3160 @$3.6K with the ATS gearing is it possible to regear the gear box, is it reasonable cost, and who does that? I think the 6060 would be too tall but maybe not.

Thanks for looking.

Someone to talk to would be Tick Performance, they do a lot of work on Tremecs and have a lot of upgrades for them. If anyone could answer your question - it would be them.

Out of curiosity - could you just go with changing the center section to something with shallower gears?

yeah. that's what I was trying to say. the gear box being the center section. in my thinking a taller first and second would be a little easier to drive around town. Just a tad bit more running room from stop light would be good. I will look at tick, keep looking for ATS swap-ables in the mean time. It would definitely be a winter project.

The much easier, cheaper option here Wook, would be swapping the rear diff to the 2.77 from the SS..

I'm totally hearing you. I am not exactly sure if that would.... I need to look at it some more.

So with the ATS first gear only ratio its about a 7 percent (increase) factor the rest is the same.

With the 2.77 rear diff, the entire drive line is increased by 18 percent. And I am not sure I could cruise in 6th under 80 mph. lol, the notion of an autobaun gear is kinda fun to think about though.

Would this be more like a 5 speed I wonder????

the nature of the turbo ramp up, makes me pause a bit about possibly over doing it. It still needs a modest ramp to get to the meat of the power band.

I would just like to not have to shift in the middle of a turn. I could solve it by slowing down, but not speeding up. slowing down....

crazy trap there, 6spd. I wonder too. there isn't a hell of a lot out there expect placard data. The SS M6 first gear is a 2.66 first on the 3.73 rear. way too low. ltg is a 4.40 on the same 3.73 rear.

I did send a msg to tick to see.

Its the ATS 1st gear I desire to magically appear in my gear box to test.

Call Rockland Standard Gear. Pick their brains. They’ll likely have some answers.

You mean too tall. Your 4.40 is lower than an SS's 2.66

Right. this gets loopy even for me. Also another correction the rear is 3.27 on the 4 and 6. I had parroted info I saw here. 2.77 is "less-far" away from 3.73 of the SS M6, that I referred to earlier. but 3.27 / 2.77 is still 80 mph at 2000 as I have now found the calculators and such. I could go 200 mph though.

"OMG, the Shelby uses a 4 banger trans... that's funny."

yeah that was a funny thing. PPl are reading GT 350 and think its carte blanche on loading it with twice the torsion load (tuned I4 and SC V6) as OK. and its not right cause you have much more torsion loading on the driven shaft with "shorter" gears.

Not a hellofalotta options out there.

Yep, 2.77 would give you a "MPG" gear for long drives. It would essentially be a 5 speed for the most part, but would meet your goals to an extent, with minimal work.
