I believe the COPO's start life as I4 or V6 cars that are pulled from the production line for modification into race cars. Therefore, the non-SS grilles and also no spoiler mounting holes in the trunk lids. Cheaper and easier for production. |

Reduced airflow through the front end is a big part of it as well. The SS is designed to flow a ton of air through the front end, the I4 & SS don't have the same flow requirements and neither does an all out drag car. Less air through the front equals less drag and fast times.
