Tires Experts Please

Hi All,

Can any of you track regulars take a look at my tires and let me know if this is how my tires should look after a day at the track? Seems like a lot of melting going on. This was my first ever track day (run at Palmer MotorSports with SCDA), so I do not know what normal track tire wear looks like. Looking for any advice and input from the track community.

Tires are Dunlop Supermaxx race 2, 80 UTQG, DOT tires. Car is a 2018 Camaro SS per my signature.

Totally normal. You chose a reaaaaaaly expensive tire for your first ever DE. Those are optional OEM Porsche GT3 tires.

Yeah, I know. I got a workplace award giftcard and used it on Amazon for those tires, so didn't really cost me anything, and they were amazing. I have never had the experience of "feeling the tires working" until these. And it will save my street tires some abuse. If I drive them that hard every time, how many miles should I expect to get out of them?

Agree Shawn, what you are seeing is normal. I have to say the first pic played tricks on my eyes at first. But I will say that track is brutal on tires!! Especially turn 4 & 5, and also 7 & 12. But not knowing your pace and what not there's no telling how may miles. We usually talk track days, and sessions or heat cycles, especially if they are a dedicated set-up. Where are you in MA?

Ah- makes a lot more sense! No idea, they look great though. They might last a while if you only use them on track. Prolly won’t last long if street driven. 5-6k miles, maybe longer for street? OEM Porsche developed tires like these are usually very robust and last longer than you’d expect. These are a “you can drive it to the track and back” tire, not intended for daily use at all.

The tires look brand new.
What you see is crap they picked up, which all sticky tires will do. This will happen especially if you drive "off line" where all the crap "marbles" usually are. Marbles are small pieces of tire rubber from other cars that collect on the outside of most corners.
Next time you go out on them, they will feel bumpy. But after they heat up and after a few corners all this crap will clean up (and likely end up on your car's rear qtr panels ) Enjoy and have fun!

Hey Driven,
I am from Topsfield, MA. About 23 miles north of Boston. I dinged you via IM. Plan to see you at the NHMS COM in Oct. Funny you say that about the first pic - it had the same effect on me for a minute.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Good to know that is normal. Kinda what I thought was happening about picking up marbles, but wanted to be sure I wasn't getting the tires too hot. I was running with the novice group, so the marbles were on every line

Like others have said this is totally normal. You can pick up rubber on line, off line, anywhere when they’re hot.

FYI, it’s gonna sound like you’re shedding rocks, next time you go out. The tires will re heat
And shed all the debris while your driving aggressively, then pick stuff back up on your in lap.

Hey I’ve got theses exact same tires (NO - Porsche spec) They’re practically new and in storage. If you’ll pay the shipping I’ll give them to you. Let me know if you’re interested. I can get you pics if you want.
