I just got the car with 47,000 miles. I used sonax on it but it was too balled up. So I used my electric razor. Looks better, not perfect. May just buy a new shift knob later on but I can live with it like this.

FYI in case someone has a hairy knob.

I’d just get a new one, who knows where that knob has been it looks like it has been rode hard and put away wet.

This reminds me why I want to install a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and shift boot.

Best thing I ever did, I got a 2SS wheel from a member here in the classifieds, OEM leather shift boot from Wildhammer and a shift knob from SpeedDawg. Now I don't have to worry about blood, grease or it matting down, I never cared for the feel of it anyway. The OEM parts are in a box in case the new owner wants them. [IMG][/IMG]

I was thinking of going non suede next time. No one likes a hairy knob. That’s what my wife tells me anyways.

Yeah, IDK about the alcantara/fake suede fad. It does work pretty well, especially if you're willing to wear gloves, but I don't very often.

The issues with it getting dirty are overblown though, I use Sonax and clean it about once a month, looks brand new after 20k miles. You just can't let it get super-dirty, it's best to clean it BEFORE it looks like it needs to be cleaned. If you wait too long it takes several repeated cleanings to get it clean. It's best to clean real leather periodically too.

They really should make leather an option for those that want it. I definitely prefer my standard SS leather steering wheel & shifter to the 1LE 'alcantara' setup.
