10L80 vs 10L90
The new 2019 Camaro get’s the a10 but, It’s not the a10 (10L90) from the ZL1. It’s the a10 (10L80) from the Silverado. The question is will the 10L80 be as strong as the 10L90? Will it be like the 5th gen's where the ss got the 6L80 and the more powerful ZL1 got the 6L90? Thought's?

I believe the last digits of the model number are the power rating capabilities of the transmission. 80 series is rated for 80 Newton's, 90 series is rated for 90 Newton's.
This is how it will play out. The new 10 speed will be more then capable of handling the LT1 in stock form. I believe AFM has been replaced with DFM, so I expect the stock TCM tuning will be much better and overall less quirky to drive. However if/when you decide to mod, the 80 series isn't going to like increased power. I read the 2018 GT's are having issues with the 10r80 10 speed handling added power as well. It could be tuning related...still pretty early in the game to really tell.

Do we know that? I thought that was a truck-only thing at this point?

Not for fact no...just was basing on the truck. It would be a huge mistake not to...AFM is garbage.

It sounds slightly more involved than just a tune, and I have to imagine they'd mention it in the release. I don't think its in the 2019 LT1s.

Did they release much info about it on the trucks?

Not everything, but a good deal. It's a partnership with Tula & Delphi. Here's a decent writeup. https://www.delphi.com/dynamic-skip-fire-1
In order to work with a pushrod engine, they'd need to re-flash the computer (obviously), and incorporate the collapsible lifters on every cylinder, not just four. I believe, in GM-speak, it would also require a revalidation of the entire powertrain combination...which can cost millions. They don't usually do that on a refresh. |

So is the 10L90 entirely different or does it just have stronger parts? Do you thing the 10L80 can be beefed up using 10L90 parts? Trying to decide if its worth upgrading for the 10L80 alone. I'd be modding it to a FBO car with cam and converter eventually.

It's just a torque input rating for the transmission in different engine applications. The differences are minor. They've done this for every transmission family since...pretty much forever.

10L90 is stronger. If you are going to mod then just keep the 8l90 and put a good converter in it with a tune.

AFM actually does its' job very well on the Camaro. On the Silverado/Sierra it wasn't as great because the K2 is a brick and very sensitive to drag changes. Those swings in drag demand more on-demand torque than AFM provided, so you consistently saw it jump back to V8. With dynamic skip fire on the T1, it will be able to add an additional 1-2 cylinders worth of torque on a variable basis. It will also be able to unlock the converter and spin down to 1-3 cylinders -- better than the Camaro in that regard since the Alpha doesn't unlock the converter and drops back into V8 after coasting below 1500rpm. |

Yeah we already determined that...
AFM is crap all around...you won't convince me otherwise. Drive a 8l90 tuned with AFM disabled. compared to stock and you would more then likely agree.

I’m with you on AFM is crap. When it’s enabled at low speeds ...the exhaust tone becomes muffled, the AFM valves clatter open and closed, v4 vibration and increased injector noise is nothing but annoying, especially with a convertible. I’m not tuned ( not yet anyway), however, if I knew then what I know today, I probably would have went for the M6.
