I had one of the GMparts wholesale type sites cancel an order on me yesterday. Bummed.
Tried calling my local dealership yesterday and hung up after hold for 15 mins.

Correct. It only comes in cases of 6 for the moment. They are planning on releasing 5 quart jugs in the future.

I have a somewhat related question. Is there any reason I can't run one of the Dexos 2 rated 5W-40's all summer? I would go back to 5W-30 in the winter, but it sounds like the 5W-40 is now fine since it's Dexos certified.

I can't say for sure, but I did run the 5w40 Dexos 2 Motul year round and had a catayltic converter replaced under warranty. The new Mobli 1 0w40 dexos 2 is labeled Emissions Systems Protection. It's plausible that the Motul had some sort of wear additives that were plugging my cat.

I run the 0w40 mobil 1 dexos 2 year round now.

I run 5w40 valvoline dexos2. Zero issues and fully meets gm approved oil choices. Imo 5 is better than 0 in summer time. 0 provides more cold start protection vs 5 in winter time. But frankly id expect 5w30 to do a good job for DD as thats what gm has been putting in cars for years and years...right in their factories and dealerships.

Cool! I have a track day in early September, and another one in early October. Sounds like it would be no problem to run it that entire time, if not even longer during the warmer months.

I think the reason the manual tells you to switch back to 5W-30 is that the 5w-40 is harder on the cats. This is why a whole new 0W-40 oil was created instead of just using the 0W and 5W already available.

I find it strange that a Dexos 2 approved oil would harm the CATs. Your warranty issue was most probably not because of the oil.

Gas is usually the critical factor when it comes to CAT damages. Can you think of a specific gas station which you visited more often during the period before you had to replace the CAT? I would investigate further in this direction.

The new oil is specifically called esp for emission systems protection. The 2019 owner’s manual calls for 5W-30 dexos 1 if the new 0W-40 is not available as opposed to a 5W-40 dexos 2. I would not be so quick to rule out the oil.

The dexos 2 is likely only a certification that concerns wear ability and temp tolerance. There is a reason they tell you to run the Dexos 2 5W40 or 0W40 at track only then switch back to the 5w30 for street driving. This new Mobil1 ESP 0w40 is the only one that is recommended for street and track driving.
