Who is running open headers at track?

Who is running open headers at track?

Ok, I have added cut outs right after the headers for the track. Talking to my tuner, he says the car will be hard to tune or act up differently because of open headers. He states the air flow caused by open headers will upset the tune. He wants the cut outs moved to the rear diff area. But we all know the cut outs near the headers yield better HP in that position. Is there any truth to his thoughts?

For the guys running open headers at the track what are your thoughts and how is your performance.

My thoughts is just have two different tunes.

1. Street
2. Track open cut outs with NOS

That is just bad a$$.

I am only running open NPP flaps and that makes a ton of noise with LTs.

Nope, no electric. It’s just for track, so no temptation to through the switch street wise. Plus even with the more expensive electronic units that open my installer says they will not last and will have numerous wire melt downs.

I like it! I have plans to do the same, or possibly run them to a custom side-exit. Those non-electric ones are so much cheaper, too!

You may need to look at other cars/engines for more info on running them that short, though. I don't recall seeing any LT1s like that. I think it's more down to a lack of space under there than anything else, but I could be wrong. You could *possibly* angle them to flow the hot gases into a venturi tunnel and on to a diffuser, generating extra downforce.

The issue with running them that close is the O2 sensors.

I’m no expert, particularly with the new(er) direct injection motors, but in the LS motors you typically will lose a lot more torque than what you’ll gain in HP, unless you are no longer stock bore. I had dual electric cutouts on my 4th ge at the headers and it proved true in my instance, but it was just a big cam car. I enjoyed them for car shows and cruising to show off that cam lope though! For performance and tuning consistency I’d agree with the tuner and move them back. That extra pipe provides a lot of back pressure consistency.

Yeah unless its a big cubic inch High compression build I would move them out back near the trans area

Pretty sweet man. I put some electric cutouts after the x-pipe and before the rear axle. I swear they are just as loud as open headers on my 4th gen. It's crazy

Oh, forgot. My exhaust is custom 3 inch stainless steel. My exhaust guy makes his own cut outs. Cheap was not even a thought, custom performance and long lasting was. He’s a drag racer that has a car in the 8’s and I feel he knows what works.

But tuner says one thing and exhaust guys says another. Flip a coin.

One thing I do want to address, when the cut outs are capped you get a almost a header leak sound with the exhaust air pushing into that area hitting the cap. Trying to think off of something to put in that empty cavity and attach to the cap with a few screws. Anyone heard of anyone making something for that?

I've learned if it sounds like an exhaust leak IT IS an exhaust leak. I had cutouts after the headers on my 4th gen that looked identical to this. No exhaust leak sounds when closed. It's probably the gasket on the cap

Thanks man, I will check the gasket on the cap. Fingers crossed. Has to be, there was no header/exhaust leak before.
