Small Trunk Opening Question...

Sup y'all. Love my Camaro, but as we all know, the trunk opening is incredibly tight. Why didn't Chevy put the taillights on the trunk lid instead of the body panel, thus making the opening almost double the size? Just curious if anyone has thought of this or knows the answer.

I am pretty sure someone posted it was for rigidity. They build the car to carve up the twisties not carry golf clubs

I've managed to fit my hockey bag (lengthwise of course) into the trunk... the sticks ride shotgun though. I use my truck normally for that kind of work though.

Government regulations state that headlights/taillights MUST be placed in a fixed piece of body work (no moving parts essentially). There are workaround for this but it would be a little excessive IMO.

And this ^^^

FWIW, I’ve driven coupes as company cars where I could fit the golf bag in the trunk if I folded a rear seat. In my convertible, I remove my drivers and 3-wood and lay the bag on the rear seat.

The issue with the Alpha Camaro trunk opening is circled in red. The opening in the center doesn’t drop down as far.

A large +30” roller suitcase fits. That’s all I need.

How about the optional cargo net? It will hold a bottle of detail spray and a microfiber towel.

You just need to be more selective in the body type of your victims to ensure that they fit through the opening.

It's definitely not great, but seeing that I owned an RX-8 before, I couldn't say it's anything new.

Interestingly, Chevy Bolt actually attaches the taillights to the hatch. The workaround is that there is another set of running lights beside the reverse and turn signals that would light up if the hatch is lifted.

It would look a bit off on a Camaro for sure.

This is why they make chippers and bone-saws.

Audi does the work around a fair bit from what I’ve seen. Some cars it works, on the Camaro…. I don’t want to imagine lol. Maybe that could have integrated something where the rear reflectors are?

Or this, from the sister coupe to the Camaro off of Alpha.

But then the follow up discussion of Goose Neck vs. 4 bar. The goose neck has an interesting story back to the Mid Size Car days. An exec crushed his new leather golf bag (or so the story goes) with with a Goose Neck hinge. Henceforth all trunks had 4 bar hinges.
