2017 1SS - Advice on upgrading wheel size (worth it?)

As the title says, she's a 2017 1SS, which has the 245/285 front/rear wheels. I'm considering an upgrade to the ZL/LE set up which is 285 front/305 rear, which I understand can be done without an issue. This is figuring to be a 2500-3000 dollar upgrade with the wheels and quality tires.

My question basically: Does anyone have experience with this and does it make a noticeable performance difference? 3k buys a lot of other upgrades.

I’m having the same dilemma. Ran across this today and it’s such a good option.

Wheels and tires are going to be more of an appearance mod, however, getting rid of the stock run flats and getting a stickier tire, you'll gain better grip with a quieter ride.

On the street you'll probably notice nothing. For $2500+, hell no.

I bought a set of M017s (look like SS/1LE wheels), genuine GM TPMS sensors, and Supercar 3 tires 285-f and 305-r, and yes it cost about 3000 dollars in total. With genuine SS/1LE wheels it would cost a lot more, I am talking new parts here of course. The 1LE tires seem to have more cornering grip than my 245-f and 275-r Michelin PS4S tires on stock wheels. Subjectively, they look better than stock. The ride is rougher and there is more road noise from the 1LE tires than the PS4S tires. Cannot directly compare to runflats as I've had the PS4S for a couple years, but from memory, the Michelins had a better ride, less road noise, and better performance than the runflats. So I am now comparing the 1LE tires to something that is better than the stock runflats.

As far as the mod being worth it, cannot really answer that. Stuff for this car costs so much money that you have to either deal with it, or just leave it stock.

You can get a set of replicas and keep the stock tire size if you want to save some money. Just my opinion Good luck.

sSrry, but the correct response is Hell Yes! I swapped my stock wheels & tires for ZL1 takeoff's and the difference is night and day. The tires are probably the major contributor to the 1LE package's cornering/handling advantage vs the SS. Tires are quite a bit noisier though, and they're no fun at all in the rain.

Sorry, but no, the tires do make a difference, but they're in no way the 'major contributor' to the advantage. If I had to name one thing that made the biggest difference I would say it's the Ediff.

I say that having moved from a 2016 1SS A8 to a 2018 1SS 1LE M6.

To the OP, I happen to be very fond of the 1LE tire setup, but it has it's drawbacks. All season tires that will fit will be few and far between, as far as I know the Michelin's are the only ones that come close and you have to go to 295 on the front, though I've heard that works.

They'll look good, it will handle better, but it will also be just a tad slower on the top end and it's not going to get you anywhere close to 1LE handling. You won't have the downforce from the added spoilers, you won't have the bigger brake calibers 15.35 vs 13.6, you won't have the eDiff, you won't have the suspension, you won't have the additional cooling units, nor the Recaro seats.

The 1LE package is a lot more than just bigger tires.

I'm putting a fresh set of the supercar tires on this week to replace the ones that came on it. They lasted about 17K miles, but are past time to be replaced. With the USAA discount a set can be had for the low $900s including everything except road hazard insurance.

Bc the SS is riding on all season touring tires, right?

Yes, this can be done and does work well for those that do it.

I honestly wouldnt waste this kind of money on a bone stock 1SS when you could spend that money on better upgrades. Honestly, you could just buy better tires, and still save a good 1500-2000....

My old SS, I went from a 285 rear to a 315 rear...and while it was a great look, there wasn't much in the way of a performance gain. You'll also find the tires are more expensive for the ZL1/ZLE setup, as the size is not cheap.

Best advice: Spend the money on a set of good drag radials with a rim, throw them on when you wanna go to the strip. Spend what you save on that by adding a few bolt-ons ....

Unless you are a serious track guy, you'll never notice the difference. I'd say 305 is definitely overkill for this car. 275 is goldilocks, just right.

If I am not mistaken, it seems that the OP of this thread fitted 305 tires on the rear stock wheels. Maybe you don’t have to spend all that money and simply buy the tires?
