Is there a way to run 4 cylinders on a SS?
Hello guys, your boy back at it with again with another idiotic question. if you guys have been following me and my posts about my 2016 Camaro SS Auto, you might of seen me talk about my MPG which is 10-11. In short nothing is wrong with the car I went into service and they said there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car, but that it would need a oil change in a couple months. I didn't protest, they are the experts after all. I was recommended to ease off my gas pedal and to take the freeway, but one tech told me to use sea foam, either through my intake or my gas tank. Now other then that I wanted to ask my question, is there a way to just use 4 cylinder in the SS? Now I know it has the Active Fuel Management System, but even when I drive 5 MPH under the speed limit it does not active. It only activates in streets and parking lots when I'm going under 15 MPH. My friends C7 corvette has ECO mode that does this, and he has better gas mileage then me in a corvette. Anyway I know it's a idiotic question I guess want to know if it can be done possibly without a tune.
Thank you guys, I hope to see your responses. Last edited by WarlockCamaro; 05-10-2019 at 12:23 PM. Reason: To be honest my title was misinformed a bit, I was asking if these is a option to run a v4 in a ss. |

Pull out 4 spark plugs. BAM! Now you're running on 4 cylinders.

vettes have been getting better mileage than camaros since the early 80s, i feel that argument is invalid. my car is averaging over twice what yours is...? you must do a lot of short trip, city driving. it’s no mystery, driving habits like that will kill fuel mileage.
eehh have you looked into a volt? sounds more...your speed. |

I put about 24,000 miles on my 2016 SS before I traded it in and I averaged right at 21 mpg. I do NOT have a light foot. Something is not right with those numbers. Your AFM should be kicking in more often.

Something is not right with those numbers. Unless you have a serious lead foot.

What driving mode are you in?
Do you leave it Auto, or Manual shift? Do you have the DIC page that shows V8/V4 operation? I pretty much leave mine in Sport all the time, and only occasionally manual shift. I leave that DIC page up all the time recently (new owner, 2017 SS), and I see it constantly switching between V8 and V4, much more than I would have thought. I haven't tried it, but I would suspect if you are in Track, or manual shift mode, that V4 will probably not engage. But a guess on my part. |

Warlock, it seems to me you need to get rid of the SS and get a 2.0 liter turbo Camaro. Sounds like something is not right about your SS but since you had it checked by a dealer and they found nothing wrong then maybe getting a 4 cylinder Camaro might be the best route to go. Good luck!

something is not right, thats way too low. Even with spirited back road driving you should still average at LEAST 18-20 mpg.
change your oil. change your intake air filter. Do a test run at 65mph in 6th gear for at least 50 miles. If you are not getting close to around 28mpg then there is something wrong. |

I average around 24 mpg and drive in sport mode full time, use manual mode on and off daily, and drive "extra" spirited daily. There is something not right. Are you driving constantly in a city with stop and go?

Agreed that seems too low unless you're driving is mostly stop-and-go city traffic or you spend a lot of time stuck crawling in rush hour traffic. If this is your driving world then you might be stuck. My car get poor mileage under those conditions but it gets as high as 30 mpg out on a long highway trip. My 2SS A8 averaged 25.5 mpg at an average speed of 50 mph on the last tank. It gets in the low 20s with an average speed of 35 mph.
As others have suggested I would set the DIC to monitor V4/V8 mode and instantaneous mileage. Take it out on a long stretch of fairly level highway, set the cruise, and monitor the mode and mileage. If it isn't spending a lot of time in V4 mode with decent fuel economy then I would go back to the dealer with that info. It's possible that the computer is masking a problem that is causing your poor fuel economy. |

He's setting in LA traffic for long time. Mine averaged 24 mpg with the Magnuson Supercharger back in the day on 93 octane running 80 mph. Now it gets 2 passes down the track on 105 octane race fuel at 14 bucks a gallon

I get 12-14mpg on my commute but it’s 90% stop and go, which is still higher than what you’re seeing. Like others said, test it on an open stretch if you can - I can easily pull 28-30 for extended stretches at highway speeds
