Smart driver opt out

when I took delivery, I signed an OnStar opt out form.
does this mean I'm automatically not enrolled in the smart driver
spy program ???

my account in Chevy .com verifies I'm presently not enrolled in OnStar.

You can check the status of this functionality in either the myChevrolet phone app or the my.chevrolet.com website, once you create a profile.

I know Progressive does. I had my policy rewritten a week ago and asked about the snapshot devices. She said it would run through my OnStar. I declined.

I believe the "big brother" thread specifically mentioned State Farm accessing OnStar data via the Lexis-Nexis database service. I just noticed Lexis-Nexis listed on the insurance renewal paperwork I received today from American Family / Connect insurance (Costco).

Pretty sure YOUR data is not sold by OnStar.

Your Camaro may be part of Camaro data sold but data for your car and you is not identifiable.

But that is counter to he conspiracy theory and the internet so carry on.

It's not a conspiracy theory, unfortunately - unless you opt out, this data is being sold to a database service that markets it to insurance companies:

There's a lot of useful information in this thread, the most useful being that you can enroll or unenroll in Smart Driver on the MyChevrolet app.

My 2010 Camaro is now invisible because its OnStar is 2G based and now dead, but I have another Chevrolet with active OnStar. I found that I am not enrolled in SmartDriver. I don't recall the details, but my salesman sat with me in the car while we went through OnStar activation and phone pairing, so I must have declined SmartDriver.

So, if I'm not mistaken, we're all in control and don't have to pull fuses or de-activate OnStar in order to prevent data from reaching insurance companies.

...yes, if I'm not mistaken, the OP in that thread never explicitly opted in to Smart Driver, which seems to indicate that either Smart Driver can be opted in without the user's knowledge Maverick said, and/or telemetry data is always streamed out of the vehicle to the server side, whether or not Smart Driver is enabled.

I checked My Chevy app after the first thread on this and I was not enrolled. I purchased a new GMC truck in December and specifically asked the salesman to decline that, after this thread I checked the My GMC app and I was enrolled! So I have two plus months of my speeding recorded somewhere. Not sure if related as I've sold and purchased few bikes and sold and purchased a new truck this year but my new insurance bill (effective Mar 19th) went from $2800 to $4100. My agent bid me out and Farmers picked me up for $2400 for the same coverage, they must not subscribe.
Anyway worth a look and shop around.

Drivers that are enrolled in these services such as OnStar/Smartdriver are having their specific driving data collected.

Forbes - How Usage-Based Car Insurance Works

Quote:
Usage-based insurance programs collect vehicle “telematics” data that comes from cellular, GPS or other technology. These programs track certain driving behaviors such as:
  • Speed
  • Acceleration
  • Hard braking
  • Hard cornering
  • Miles driven
  • Time of day
  • Phone use while driving

The technology used to track your car’s telematics data depends on your car insurance company. Generally, driving data is collected in these ways:
  • Through systems built into your car, such as BMW ConnectedDrive or OnStar
  • Through a device plugged into your car’s on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) port, such as Nationwide SmartRide
  • Through a smartphone app, such as Allstate Drivewise or Farmers Signal
  • Through a device called a “tag” that is installed on your windshield or rear window and pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, such as Liberty Mutual Insurance RightTrack
Some insurance companies will offer you a choice of how you want the data collected, depending on where you live. For example, Liberty Mutual Insurance RightTrack offers you the choice among a tag, plug-in or mobile phone, while State Farm Drive Safe & Safe lets you choose between a smartphone app or your car’s OnStar system.

How your driving habits affect your car insurance premium will depend on your insurer, but in a typical UBI plan, your driving habits are tracked over a certain period of time. After you complete the initial review period, you may be offered a discount based on the telematics data.
Progressive Insurance - What is usage-based insurance?

Quote:
Telematics can transmit data from moving vehicles and share it with an information center. Whether your usage-based program calls for on-board diagnostics (a device plugged into your vehicle) or a mobile app downloaded to your smartphone, your insurer uses telematics to collect information about your driving tendencies, including hard-braking, rapid acceleration, speed, distracted driving, and how quickly you take turns in the road.

Tinfoil hat or not I turned that crap off.

One of my gripes about my Challenger, in the performance pages it had a top speed record. You could reset it, but it was there. That said I do not drive super high speeds so kind of moot.

I hear you Fran.

My service tech (laughing) mentioned he might have seen 190 MPH on that.
I have known him for years...lol

On my ZLE they auto enrolled me in the "driver spying".

I made sure to turn in off in the GM app after seeing the "Big Brother" thread when it posted.
