Register flexfuel (E85) converstion with the state?

Hi!


This might be an unusual question.


I'm looking into getting a ZL1 with 1LE option and have it exportet to Europe.
GM has sadly stopped selling the Camaro over here and according to a Chevrolet dealer the Camaro will start selling in Europe again after some kind of electrification.


What that means I do not know, full on EV or Hybrid. (or just a bad rumor?)



Since I really enjoy nice V8 I thought I'd get a 2022 ZL1 1LE.


And now for a slight problem, over here they want about 3000$ a year for the first three years(road tax) if it runs on normal fuel only BUT if I can get it registered as Flexfuel (E85) it'll be around 350$ a year instead in road tax.


The dilemma is that I can't get it registered as flexfuel over here due to a law that states basically that a car manufacturer certificate only certificates the car as is so any modifications on newer cars is near impossible.


Why I posted in this channel is that there is a transport carrier in Delaware and since I know every state basically has their own laws I thought this might be a good start.


So the question is simply can I somehow get a new or newish ZL1 1LE registered as FlexFuel in the official papers in the US? (by a third party or better yet a dealer)

I'm not sure about your question, but my understanding is that the ZL1 1LE was never sold in Europe. The aero was deemed a danger to pedestrians.

I understand what you're trying to do and share your sentiment about the car. Realistically, I think the best outcome you can achieve is to have a US state issue a registration for the car as an AFV (Alternative Fuel Vehicle).

This, however, is still not a manufacturer certificate. If that's what your state laws require, I think you're out of luck, there is no way you will ever get a flex fuel certificate for the ZL1 1LE out of General Motors, all the more because the car never came with this from the factory and E85 requires a tune at the very least, but potentially also fuel system capacity improvements. Even if you can somehow butter up a dealership to issue a flex fuel certificate on their own behalf, I doubt it would be deemed acceptable by your country's motor vehicle authority.

Also, as RamAir02 stated above, selling the ZL1 1LE was not allowed in Europe (see this article), so importing it in the first place would be a significant achievement.

There are a few for sale (ZL1 1LE), I think they wheren't allowed to be sold by a Chevrolet dealer over in Europe but you9 can apparently import then privately.

How would I go about getting an AFV issued registration for a car?

Never tried this myself and my car was just converted to flex fuel a few days ago, so all I could do is google it, which isn't really going to help you, sorry.
