Question Open Hood Latch = Dead Battery

I’ve scoured the internets looking for a schematic or definitive answer, but can’t seem to find any supporting data on this subject.

Question: If you leave your hood up (in the heated garage), for say a week while working on cosmetics, will the latch switch/sensor recognize that the “hood is open” and not allow the computer to go to sleep fully? Never had an issue w my battery when car sits for weeks at a time, until I left the hood open. I’ve since charged the battery and it tests fine, so the battery is not bad. I’ve also set the latch into the “latched” position, and I’ve seen no voltage drop (draw) over the past 2 days.

Just curious! Thanks in advance!

-Chad

I leave my hood open with a battery tender hooked up. I noticed that my battery would weaken if I don't drive for a couple of weeks. Get the Tender Jr. I picked one up for $25. For just a trickle its good enough.

I leave the hood up sometimes after taking a drive, I will put the battery tender on and the tender goes into standby about the same time frame as when I leave the hood down. I don't think that it matters. It will be interesting to see feedback on this

I had my car sitting in the garage for a week with the hood up while I was installing the RS headlights. The car died on the 7th day but I don’t think it was the hood. It did start and stay with enough juice throughout the days though

I have heard/read that leaving the hood up is hard on the gas cylinders in the hood supports. They shouldn't be left in the extended position. Not sure it that is true. When I have the battery charger connected, I just prop the hood up a little with a spray paint can.

i leave my hood open when ever i am not driving it. sometimes i don't start it for like 6 days straight and never had a problem. not even sure if leaving hood open will drain the battery or not.

Last week i switched over my battery tender to the Camaro, with the hood popped but not open. Last time i had it out a few weeks ago, it was slow to start. After 3 days the tender is in stand by mode. Doesnt really answer the questions, but just my current experience.

Sorry for the delay, but thank you for the info. Great info out there on Transport Mode, as well as the suggestions for a Battery Tender. I’ve gone ahead and picked one up and plan to install it this weekend.

Before I install the Battery Tender, I’ll be doing a few tests, as well as a Parasitic Draw Test. I’ll be sure to focus on the Hoodlatch Switch and it’s corresponding Circuit/Fuse. The engineer side of me has my curiosity peaked. I’d be willing to bet that the switch/sensor does in fact cause issues with the car not being able to go completely asleep. Time will tell based on the mA/A Draw recorded. I’ll be sure to post my findings.

For the user that wanted to see pictures of the latch/switch location, I’ll post those as well.

Thanks!
Chad

I believe the electronics go through stages of shut down and sleep, so when you check the parasitic draw, the amp draw will change over time. I don't know any details, so if you could provide some findings from your tests over time it would be greatly appreciated!

My zl1 came with a factory charger and seems to work. I have 4 others from "battery tender" that work great for many years.
