Fueling up?

I'm not sure if this question is for all of the 6gen or just the 1LE.
Pertaining to fueling up, filling the tank.
In the owners manual it states to not fill your tank more than three clicks of the nozzle or you could possibly damage the fuel system, make the car run rough etc.
Can someone please fill me in as to what they mean by three clicks of the nozzle?
The proper procedure to fill the tank.

Just fill it like you always have....3 clicks refers to the pump shutting off when it senses a fill, and you manually starting again until it shuts off again. And then again. Very stupid.

Just start filling and engage the automatic fill level on the nozzle, when it clicks the first time, you are finished.

I suspect that they mean when the tank is full the fuel nozzle will automatically shut off (click). You can then squeeze the handle and restart until the nozzle shuts off again. Each time you do that it pumps a bit more fuel into the tank. The fuel system is sealed so I guess pumping too much fuel into the tank could damage the system.

Not a Camaro problem but I've seen way too many people do this repeatedly until they have fuel running down the side of their car!

Why not to overfill (top up) your gas tank...

The problem is there is a vent near the top of the fuel fill tube. This is intended to vent fuel vapors (not liquid) back to the charcoal canister, which adsorbs the fuel molecules until the next time you start the car and the canister is purged (evap/purge system).
If you overfill, LIQUID fuel can enter the vent line and saturate the charcoal canister. This can result in various trouble codes when the car tries to purge the canister. There is also a switching valve which toggles between evap and purge modes. Like the canister, it is not designed to deal with liquid fuel (only vapor), and will fail if exposed to liquid.
The pain and cost of replacing these components depends on how far they are buried behind other stuff in the car!

I do this to rental cars when I am filling up several miles away from the airport.

Ok, that's what I was thinking, not to top off the tank.
I've only filled it once and had removed the nozzle as soon as it shut off.
It only gave me 3/4 of a tank.
Next time I'll run the fuel flow at the slow setting on the nozzle to see if I end up with more in the tank.
Thanks.

On my 5th Gen it would click off WAY before the tank was full, although it would reach the full mark, it would still take up to 3 more gallons in fuel meaning it wasnt really full.

I fill on the slow setting on the pump and then just round up to the nearest dime. I used to go the the next dollar but quit that when all of the info came out about overfilling and impacting the charcoal canister.

Don't overfill, not worth it. Only thing that sucks is when you get a pump that doesn't shut off correctly (usually shuts off TOO soon) and you have to keep pumping by hand. But only had this happen at one gas station so far.
