That and the F4U are my favorite looking plane. So much character. Beautiful planes. Bet is was a blast!

I really do love those Corsairs. I loved the Black Sheep Squadron
I do have to be honest and say that my favorite WW2 plane is the P-51D Mustang. Corsair is a close second. I'd LOVE to fly either.

Have about 1 whole hr dual in the P-51 from down here.LOL Late great Uncle had a P-51 Bought it for $21,000 and sold it for $28,000! back in the 60's when I was a young kid. Found out just two years ago(from the coworker who took the above pix) it is still flying as Ain't Misbehavin. Man would love to get up and close to see it again.

AWESOME. As a former Marine, I love the corsair. Have several models and am looking at purchasing a gas model with 4 ft wing span. Wonder if the model will make the same noise as the real one in a dive??????
Where was this and can anyone visit? |

I don't recall his official victory count but what amazed me about him was doing this in the P-47... With the huge radial engine and no radiator, it could take tremendous punishment, but it was very heavy and had a tendancy to not pull out of high speed dives... The control surfaces on the tail (ailerons I believe is the term) would actually flex and bend in the opposite direction the pilots were trying to command... leading to terminal flights... Kirby was able to take advantage of the Speed of the P-47 and fly around the inherent problems... and was incredibly successful... though even he wasn't the highest scoring ace in the '47...

F2G and the F4U were the same plane but from different manufacturer. The wasp R2800 was a monster engine. The P38 is my favorite plane next too the P-51 and P-47
