Same car though, I don't see why people let something as silly as a name keep them from buying it. Same for diehard firebird guys that won't buy a 5th gen just because it has bowties instead of Pontiac emblems.
Irony here is this....the current new Impala is being built for sale while the previous generation Impala is still being built for sale to rental fleets...

I think Impala sales would have really hurt if it had been in the form of the SS.

For basic transportation cars like the malibu and Impala? Fleet sales are huge, and they cater to that base heavily and have for a few decades.

yeah but I doubt they want to do that forever, having 2 completely different cars named Impala isn't a long term solution, they knew they'd have to switch to the new one eventually. And I have to wonder how people who own new Impala's feel when they rent one on vacation and get a "new" 2006 body style.

Imagine renting a Camaro convertible to cruise around hawaii in and they gave ya a 4th gen, probably some confused and displeased customers.

I was thinking more along the lines of families that have a Impala at home and think they're renting what they're used to.

But considering how much nicer the interior and amenities are on the new one, I'd think even business folks in town for a day or two would notice... unless they're offering some of that in the LTD model now.

Actually, I disagree. The G8 (which is what the SS is..) was offered with solid V6 and V8 option here in the USA, and the car is generally well liked. The problem was of course that Pontiac was already well in the tank by the time they intro'd it...and it was gone in 2-3 years.

The Holden Commodore, which the SS/G8 are, has been around for a LONG time... and it has been a very good car...

I suppose it can be compared to staying at the Hilton or going to a Super8.

That's true if the rental companies are being upfront about what they're renting. You wouldn't be very happy if you thought you were booking a room at the Hilton and got the key to a Super8 room though.
