ceramic undercoating - question

what exactly is it? do dealers want to add this to your car is it worth it or is it just an add on for extra money at dealer?

i don't even think dealers know what it is. its one of the BS fluff things they try to add on to the cost when they dont even do anything extra to the car.

You can be assured it's a scam.

First, your car has outstanding corrosion protection from the factory. ELPO and paint over galvanized steel. Will it show rust someday? Probably and it certainly depends on your driving in rain or worse salted roads.

However, if you think about it, unless they drop the entire exhaust and drive train there is no possible way to do any kind of reasonable coverage for the underbody. Spray under your door? Maybe but there should be after hem sealer there for corrosion protection.

My guess is they are charging you hundreds for waving a can of spray on something at your car.

Short of plastic or aluminum (still corrodes) orange rust is inevitable if you drive a car.

As a side however, I've seen brand new cars parked on grass lots (moisture) with horrible corrosion without being driven. This was years ago, though.

I worked at a dealer in the service department part time when I was in the Coast Guard and they sold an electronic rust preventer, it was a small box with two leads with stick on anodes you'd put on the inner fenders and mount the box on the firewall. This thing was $600 and did jack shit other than have a flashing LED, we put two pieces of angle iron out behind the shop for a week, one with the device hooked to a battery, it looked like the one with the snake oil was rusted more. Pretty much anything a dealer is selling is $ driven and not in your best interest.

look up the movie Fargo and find the clip about Tru-Coat and you'll understand what's going on.

Any kind of "dealer add-on" is a total rip.

Free Nitrogen? LOLOL
Windshield replacement? LOLOL
Paint Sealant? LOLOL
Anti-Theft? LOLOL

Now part of my LOLOL there is because of the price that a dealer typically puts next to it but in general just on the face of it it's garbage and useless.
