Fuel leak !!!!

Guys,
2019 ZL1 1LE.... pulled out of my garage with 3/8 tank of fuel ⛽️ and 120 miles to empty. After 1 mile I looked and it showed 1/4 tank and 70 miles til empty...

I woke up to that ! I watched as the gas needle visibly was decreasing and the trip computer was constantly decreasing the miles to empty.

I drove one more mile and stopped at a safe place just as the low fuel alarm came on and the gauge showed E...

I shut off the engine immediately , but it never ran rough or entered a Limp Mode.... it was raining hard so I couldnt see any visible leaks.. Towed to a dealer, but they were already closed.

My best guess is a big leak in one of the pressure lines , rail, or injector, but the engine never ran rough, so I’m uncertain.

Anyone see anything like this, or have a better guess.....no way a fuel gauge would fail in this way...

Thanks guys,
Bill

Any update on this, your car is stock right? A fuel leak like that should create a strong fuel smell at the leak point and everywhere it goes making it easier to locate. At least no fire, so that's good.

Mystery solved....
It looked exactly like a pressurized leak.. Heavy rain would have masked the smell.... But, no Leak. It was all electrical , but did not look like any gauge failure I have ever seen.

The left rear tire cut through 4 wires in a bundle. The dealer repaired the wires and rerouted the bundle.

Take-away :

Dealer notified GM of problem area
Dealer looked for larger than OEM tires to disallow the warranty repair. Mine were OEM size...

Next time you have the left rear off, take a look and have your dealer do a warranty repair... I can send a copy of my repair invoice if anyone needs it.

Cheers,
Bill

Thanks for the update. I just had my wheels off of my 20 ZL1 and didn't really notice anything. Might have to pull my LEFT REAR WHEEL off to have another look.

Which left rear wheel, though? The one up front? Or the one on the passenger side?

I think what you are asking is where is the harness in the wheel well? Or maybe your just having one of those days. LOL! Forward side of wheel well towards the center of the car. There is a main harness routed along the inside of the wheel well liner. Sometimes wider tires will rub there and damage the harness. On rare occasions, sometimes the harness is not correctly positioned and pushes the liner out causing a rubbing issue. Here is a pic I found posted by someone else to help with a visual.

That's good news about fuel leak. Very weird the stock rear 325/30/19 ZLE 3Rs did this. Your wiring harness must have been bunched up or routed weird, and sticking out a LOT more.

I was running 345/30/19 PSC2, 135-140 mph on Nascar banking turn 1-2 at Auto Club Speedway, and only light rubbing with small hole in liner and no damage to harness. I re-routed.

I just got some slicks for my car and when I was installing them and checking clearance I noticed that it was rubbing the inner fender liner on the driver's side so I pulled the liner back and found the fuel pump harness was holding the liner out and causing it to rub the tire. I assumed that this was because of the size of my slicks, I moved the wiring and then added a clip to hold the liner in. Now that I see your issue I think its a flaw in the routing of the harness. Glad I noticed mine before I had and issue!! Also happy they fixed yours.
