Tire questions

I'm still shopping for a ZL1 and with the recent change to colder weather in Georgia, I wanted to see what you guys do for sub 40 degree weather. So a few questions.

Tire differences between the 1LE and non-1LE (19 vs 20s) tires. Are they both not recommended to be used below 40 degrees?

Typical miles reached with stock tires on both 1LE and non-1LE before replacement needed. Normal street use...

Any decent all-weather tires that fit either the 1LE or non-1LE?

Thanks!!

On my SS 1LE I used the Supercar 3’s all year long & I’d guess you could get 15K miles out of them if you really babied them. The traction sucked in colder weather & the Supercar 3R’s have been even worse. You could use them in the winters in the south, but you’d have to be very careful with throttle input. I’m about to swap out next week for something less extreme for winter use & have a dedicated street & track setup. As far as I can tell, you’re not going to find an all weather tire in the ZLE sizes (never looked in the ZL1 size). I’ll be able to give you better input on cold weather traction in the next week or so, as I’m about to order something less extreme daily use. Thinking either Michelin PS4S or Continental extreme contact sport.

On my ZLE I got around 4500 miles out of the original tires. They were worthless in cool weather and if it rained you were driving 45 mph with your flashers on...not fun.

I replaced them with MPS4S in stock sizes and I love them. I've got around 15,000 miles on them so far and they still look good. I daily this car in KY weather so it will see some snow once in a while.

Do not drive ZLE tires in the cold or the rain. They also will powder coat your lower half with stones and gravel. I live in Georgia too and they are not street tires, they are track tires with less than 5000 miles of wear. Save them for the track and get a set of PS4s. Very little trade off in handling on the street.

I did not like the factor GYs during winter months, even here in the Phoenix area. Just awful on wet roads below 40 degrees. I daily mine so I replaced the GYs with Michelin PS4S. Couldn't be happier. My son runs the same size Continental ECSs on his Mustang GT and those seem to work as well.

I believe that all '20 ZL1 comes with Eagle F1 Supercar 3R which is a track tire and most definitely not a daily street tire. So you should prepare to buy a dry/wet street tire. If you live where it rarely freezes you might buy the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or if you will drive in freezing temps you might buy an all-season tire.

Are the Continental’s pretty much on par with the PS4S? I’m thinking about trying them since they have a nice price point.

The base ZL1 & SS 1LE use the Supercar 3. 3R is only on the ZLE. Neither are good in cold weather anyway

Not sure what to think of the PS4’s. Sold the stock tires and added them a few months ago. Yesterday after a 25 mile ride in 50f weather I punched the gas pedal at 30 mph and tires broke loose and TC light came on. I didn’t expect that for them to break loose. Maybe I just don’t realize how powerful this car is?

I’d fully expect it to brake loose at that temp & speed lol. The 1st day I got mine I punched it at 70 mph on the highway in 50 degree weather & it broke loose. It was night time so no sunshine to heat the roads though.

Mine has the 4S too. I can go WOT in manual at 30 mph with no major spin but in Auto and WOT at 30 smokes them, if it downshifts. I always use manual when getting serious.

Difficult to tell because the two car are so different. As far as general impressions go, PS4S seem quieter and a bit softer/more isolated from the road. The ride with the Continentals seems more European...if that makes sense. The two tires seem similar on wet roads and in the cold...both are better than the factory GYs. I prefer the Michelins. But given the price, the Continentals were a no-brainer for my son who doesn't drive as much or as far.

Appreciate the insight on them. The Michelin’s might be the way for me to go especially with the ZLE suspension being pretty stiff.

As said, both tires that come on the ZL1 and 1LE are NOT to be driven in cold weather nor in the rain. Pretty much says it in the owners manual to not drive these tires in temps 40F or below and they can have cracks in the sidewall at around 20F.

Of course, others have driven in those conditions but if you do. You're taking a risk and will need to drive slow. Keep these tires for the track, if you ever plan on going and if you don't then you can sell them.

I, personally, have went with Pirelli P Zero (on my 2nd set) and used them a handful of times at Auto X events and they handle well. I do drive my car year round, unless it's going to be below 30. I also live in Georgia, near Savannah.

Now with the all weather question, I'm not certain but you can't go wrong with Michelin or Continental tires.
