Dead battery 18 ZL1LE

When not in use, I keep it on a maintainer. If the car sits without maintainer for a week or longer the battery is dead. Replaced it with an optima yellow top yesterday. Are dead batteries common ?

I tested it at autozone and they stated it was head. Yet at home shows 12.7 volts. Is there more to the battery?

Mine sits for 2 weeks or more at a time before I drive it. Never had any issues with the battery. Though I do drive it every day for about 2 weeks before letting it sit for another 2 weeks.

2018 with 17k miles.

How much do you drive it once you do get to drive it? I would think a good trickle charger would keep the battery maintained.

It's not volts that starts a car, it's amperage, you can have a battery with 12.7 volts but wont start the car due to no/low amperage. Test machines put a draw on the battery for amp draw.

Bad batteries can show good voltage just sitting, but under load they fail to deliver the juice. A good trickle charger / maintainer can keep a battery alive for many years. Mine is plugged in every time I park the car, because I only drive it a few times a month.

Lead acid batteries want to live at a high state of charge, 13.4V or so and you’ll be set. Get a good maintainer a leave it connected when not driving. There are some fairly decent “ battery testers” on Amazon that are “same same” as the Midtronics EXP-1000. That’s a ~2k tool that kicks ass but the $50 Amazon one will do a CCA test and let you know “ good or bad” battery. They do a quick pulse to see if it can deliver the 600 or so CCA rating. I’ve tested the Amazon tool against the Midtronics and the results are the “same” and the numbers close enough.

The best auto charger on the market

These cars eat batteries. Turning over a 6.2L takes some juice

Mine sits on a charger anytime it is in the garage. Only takes a minute to take it off and the hood being open is a "good" remainder that it is on there, LOL!

Right, however, just because it reads 12.7V with no load doesn't mean it's a good battery. One or more cells could have failed inside it, not allowing it to put out the amperage (CCA rating) it needs to work properly. Parts stores will use a tool that load tests it, which can determine the battery health. I am sure that's what they did.

Unfortunately, ACDelco batteries failing within a few years is certainly not uncommon.

Get a Batteryminder tender they have a desulfurator mode and will often bring a battery back. Brought mine from 60 % to 90 %.

Optimate does that and it's better quality. I've tried them all
