There are two lashes that have to be set:
1) fuel lobe on base circle, this sets the preload, many if not most people including me skip this step. Why? because it won't fail the pump, if too big of a shimm it just takes up pump stroke which is a "bad" thing from a max fuel delivery perspective.


2) Once the base circle is set, then you go to measure max stroke with no gasket (the gasket provides the clearance (top of lobe). Grind shim so with hand pressure the pump can sit on valley cover. Insert gasket and done. Then you know for sure the pump ain't gonna blow off the blots. However, see my comment on stroke preload at step 1.

So after two installs, since the 2) the peak required the most grinding. I and I assume most installers just do step 2. But my installs maynot be typical. Long story short, better do both lashes as per the writeups. I'm sure the big shops that do say 2 installs a day have their own opinion based on hundreds of installs.
