Heads up display does not turn on

Heads up display randomly shut off for good one day. Tried disconnecting the battery and all. Brought it over to the dealer who claims it is internally malfunctioning and it isn’t covered under warranty. $200 to diagnose and $1800 to replace including the brand new windshield that has to go in as well. Anyone else have this issue and found another solution? I’m not very trusting of dealers.

First of all, to the forums Pardon me for asking the obvious, but have you checked fuses? Also, I'm not sure if the windshield really has to come out for HUD replacement, will check in the service manual (and even if yes, why can't they reuse the old windshield? will they crack it during removal? strange...).

EDIT: the fuse in question is F16 in the rear compartment fuse block, and indeed either the windshield has to come out or the entire instrument panel disassembled, because the HUD has to be lifted upwards when removed.

are you sure you didn't accidently move it all the way down. I have done this while detailing the interior.

Thank you sir, and yeah did the obvious things first, check brightness, hud height, fuses, etc. before I took it in. After I took it in they told me they have to bring a windshield guy out and replace the whole unit bc it’s internally malfunctioning. Tough to think about spending $2000+ for something that in my opinion, should obviously be covered under warranty

Well, your bumper to bumper was 3 years or 36k miles, so technically GM kept their end of the bargain. I feel your pain, it's a malfunctioning unit and it definitely isn't your fault that the service procedure is so complicated.

Any chance they can reuse the windshield? At least that way you'd be $500 in from that two grand.

I bought the car less than a year ago CPO with a 12 month, 12k mile bumper to bumper so they are definitely not holding up their part here I think. But if no one else has a fix they’ve done I can go without it. Just pretty unfortunate from Chevy’s standpoint. And yeah if I ever get it done I’ll ask them about the windshield for sure good point.

Ah, you didn't mention the CPO. I'd definitely double-check the fine print, it's surprising that a core functional flaw that definitely wasn't incurred by anything you did (unlike curbing wheels or cracking splitters etc.) wouldn't be covered by a GM CPO warranty.

How many miles have you put on it since you bought it?

I told them to please double check because that’s ridiculous and she said she was “surprised too” that they didn’t cover it. I completely agree and it’s very disappointing.
