Any benefits of increasing tire width?

Thinking about going from 305 to 315 in the back snd keeping front at 285. Or possibly increasing front as well. Any Cons? Benefits? Does it effect driving/ride quality.

Thoughts?

what are you going to use the car for? Daily driving, no racing...keep it stock.

Other than the more aggressive stance, there's not much benefit unless you need more traction than what you have with the OEM tire size. The difference in tire size is so minimal, you're not going to notice any difference in day to day driving.

If you're just driving around town. I don't see any benefit.

If you're drag racing or racing on a road course, there is a benefit.

Not every tire contacts the ground the same. Some have more of a contact patch and others have less.

You really wouldn't notice the 1 up size just driving around unless you're being aggressive in the corners but then you'd have to know what you're "feeling" to know what you're looking for.

It's your car, do what you want but if you're only driving it around like a normal, law abiding by person should. Then I see no benefit.

Who drives these cars like law abiding citizens ALL the time. I find that very difficult!

When I bought the car it had 285/315 (r888r) on the stock wheels. Since then I've put 305/325 gy3's with Apex arc 8 wheels to use as dd and back and forth to the track.

I'm guessing the wider tires pay dividends at the track, but they follow all the cracks as well on the street. If I wasn't planning on driving to the track on a regular basis and driving in colder weather, I'd use the stock setup everyday.

I’m running R888Rs in 325/30/20. I need all the traction I can get. Stance looks sick too!

I run 315 on the rear and 285 on the front. Stock size wheels. Toyo r888r all around. Street only. I do get a bit more traction on a hard start with the 315s. The more traction the better on the rear. I see no advantage to up-sizing the fronts for street driving only.

Wider tires have a larger effect on lateral G's in the corners than straight line traction.

Going wider equally both front and rear will keep the balance in the corners and provide greater cornering loads.

I went for 275/35/20 fronts and 315/30/20 rears with 1LE spec wheels on my supercharged SS to preserve the front/rear balance (within 0.3%) as per tiresize.com, and cornering capability increased much more tangibly than straight line acceleration.

The look of wider tires, however, would definitely be more menacing, especially on your ZL1.

Wider tires usually cost more money too!

Im running 295/30/20 front and 325/30/20 rear. The wider the tire the more contact you have to the ground. The rear tire width obviously helps with straight line but going wider in the front hinders it as it is more mass to rotate. In the corners wider tires all the way around are ideal to a point. I went with my rear size for the straight line traction and looks. I went with the front width for the looks. Over all I would not change a thing and this will be the combination I stick with.

BTW, see http://bndtechsource.ucoz.com/index/...alculator/0-20, and specifically the screenshots below for an example with 99Y load index tires. However, if the new, wider tire has a significantly higher load index, say 103 or 104 vs the original 99, the resulting contact patch can actually be smaller.

The taller sidewall on the 315 improves ride quality a tiny bit as well.
