A steel trailer like mine you should be around 6000 to 6200 with tools, extra fuel, a box on the front, spare tire, etc. If you go aluminum like I've had in the past you'll save about 400 to 500 lbs. My steel trailer weighed right at 2k with just the ramps. My 20ft Sundowner weighed 1500 lbs and my 18 ft aluma was 1400. So big weight saving on aluminum but twice the price. About 9500.00 for a 18 to 20 ft aluminum and I bought my Heartland 20ft for 4100.00 and it was new also.

No more then you are going to drive it, you could find an older clean unit and do a few mods to it. My 2000 GMC Yukon 5.3 makes about 420-430bhp and will pull 6k lbs with ease.

In that case, I recommend going with the 5.3 and disabling the AFM.

Only towing once a month doesn't really justify the added cost of diesel.

Definitely disable the DOD asap. Not sure if you are aware or not but the 5.3 and 6.2 can drop down to just 1 cylinder when the DOD kicks in. If you do start to lean towards the Duramax, I would get one now before gm potentially completely ruins that engine with DOD which I've heard is coming in the near future possibly. 👍

Have 6.0 GMC 2500 and it handles anything I want to tow. Keep in mind the diesel will hold resale value better than the gas.

I had a '16 silverado 5.3 z71. it spent most of it's life towing our tige wakeboats. biggest one was 7000lbs and that truck/engine did a great job towing it from wisconsin to utah. I got 18-19 regularly(driving like an old man) around town when daily driving when I wasn't towing. 13ish when loaded down. had no issues holding 70-75 going to the calville bay launch ramp up and down grade.

never once did I wish/want for the 6.2 or a 3/4ton.

I'd certainly drive the diesel and the increased mpg's might make the math work out to a better value even after factoring the higher cost of diesel. I bet the diesel would destroy the gas in towing mpgs....

I drove all 3 big boys and the chevy had, hands down, the nicest ride of the 3. dodge felt cheap but I think it would have out-towed the chevy all day long. ford was nice and a good choice as well but the chevy felt more like a car on the freeway. super smooth......

If you go with the 5.3, definitely go with the 10 speed. Drove amazing.

I am a fan of the 910lbs of torque in the Duramax 6.6l….way overkill for my 3000lb jet boat.
DEF fluid is a pain when it gets cold, and you have to keep adding it every few diesel fill ups.

In regards to the 1500, they greatly improved the dash in 2022.

In 12,000 miles I've only added Deff 3 times but never a full jug. The diesel will use more Deff when towing but it's minimal on the 3.0 Babymax. Totally agree on the 5.3 and 10 speed but you have to buy at least the LT to get the 10 speed. Customs and some cheaper models will only have the 8 speed unless they have changed that for 2023. I had a 2020 5.3 GMC Elevation and it was pretty awesome with the 10 speed compared to my 2017 Ltz with 5.3 or even my 2017 GMC Slt with the 8 speed. The 10 speed is really superior to the 8 speed with any of the engine packages in daily driving or towing.

ill have to buy a trailer but that will come later but if you guys were looking at a truck to be a daily and tow once a month or so would you be looking at 5.3 or the baby diesel? ive never been a truck guy so dont know much about this stuff i appreciate any help! thanks

My last pick up was a 2018 with the 5.3 in it. I put 180,000 miles on it in 3 years before I sold it. It crapped a tranny when it was a roughly 1.5 years old at 105,000 miles. I had a map sensor go at 130,000 miles and a water pump at 170,000. Other than basic maintenance I didn’t have many issues with it. Unless you are towing a lot, don’t touch a diesel with a 10 foot pole. The add maintenance expense, emissions systems, ect are making them a real pain the ass to own just to drive around.
