1996 Impala SS 1,473 Miles

I was at the dealership today having the oil changed on my Camaro and saw this beauty sitting outside of the showroom. I thought it was overpriced, but when I returned home and researched it, I found that it's actually a fair price.

It's surprising considering the original $24,905 MSRP. My feeling is that some 5th generation trims and editions will be worth at least their MSRP too.

Two years ago I sold my 1996 Impala SS that had just under 10K on the clock. Over the years I had done some extensive modifications such as converting her over to a six speed, 373 gears, removing the engine and professionally rebuilding for turbo application, added Bonneville seats, rare 1990 ZR1 wheels, and much much more. I sold the Impala SS for more than I paid for her new but less than what I had spent with the modifications. Even though all the modifications were as functional and appealing as if they came of the assembly line I believe I would have gotten the same money without all the expensive mods. Just saying.

This is on my wish list along with the CTS-V wagon. Apparently i'm not the only one either as i've found.

My dad had the Caprice version of that platform with the 5.7L V8. Not quite as sharp / sporty looking but even those have held their value pretty well. I think he traded it in on the 2004 Monte Carlo that my son now drives.

The 1,473 miles is crazy! If you drove it 100 miles per year, you’d have more miles on it. Somebody must have thought “this is one to keep” (and they were kinda right on that).

It's clear that the owner rarely enjoyed the experience of driving it over the past 24 years. Also, even if the dealership paid the owner what he originally paid for the car, that's 24 years of $25K invested without gains on it.

Basically, all that was accomplished, was preserving the car for the next owner. It sorta seems like a waste to me.

^ gotta agree with you on that one - why have a car if not to drive it and enjoy it?

I feel guilty that my 2015 Camaro has only 16,500 miles on it. I'm hoping that my move in the Spring will allow for more opportunities to drive it.

Its a fair price for a low mileage original Impala. Impala SSs can demand more money since it is a rare breed that no longer is being made. They have a great powertrain and a nice v8 soundtrack. Of course, it isn't the fastest ride out there, and I would almost advise one to look at the more recent Chevy SS, as it has a more powerful powerplant, with better handling capabilities.

It is a sweet car, no doubt. The downside of buying a very low mileage car is that you will literally have to use it as a paperweight if you want to retain the value and uniqueness. On the other hand, its a great way to get a terrific car that is no longer being made, and if you plan to keep it then you can drive it as much as you like.

As much as I like Impalas, that purple paint job explains why it was hardly driven...lol...My guess is the car was purchased at night, and its true color discovered the next morning.

Have you seen it in person? It's a beautiful color.

That's a collector car with those miles and condition. It's called Dark Cherry Metallic, aka DCM by owners. It's a beautiful color in daylight. We had a '96 Impala SS in DCM. We kept it for five years and sold it for almost what we paid for it. It was a great driver, so comfortable in those bucket seats. You sat into them, not on top of them. Great performance (for 1996) and luxury compared to most comparable offerings of the time.

The '96 was also available in a beautiful gray green and black. The gray interior was the only interior choice.

My son still has his DCM, if I had to do it all over again I too would have gone for the DCM color, it's really beautiful and much easier to keep than the black.

Its not purple. Think of it as a hyper ox blood color. Its beautiful when all cleaned up.

I have two black vehicles. I hate myself.
