Oil Consumption (another one)

Hey folks,

I was curious to get your thoughts on this:

After 5.5k miles and 20% of oil life left, my oil level was on low mark of dipstick. I use my 1LE as DD and occasional track days / HPDE.

I did one trackday with it about 3 months ago, I did not lose any oil during the trackday. I am using mobil 1 Ow40 ESP so theoretically I don't have to swap oil after each trackday.

I was planning to change it now but regardless this oil consumption scares me a bit, car has 22k miles and did not consume oil after break in.

Should I take it to the dealer for inspection or is 1 quart / 5.5 k miles of aggressive driving 'acceptable''

thanks!

You'd be wasting your time taking it to a dealer, 5500 miles and 1 qt low is well within normal usage according to GM. I wouldn't really worry about that kind of usage, very low on the scale IMO. But considering you are driving the car hard and occasionally track it, I'd probably change the oil a bit more often.

If that was a VW/Audi, everyone would marvel at how low the consumption is.

Depends which years and which engines. The 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI (E888 Gen.1 and Gen.2) had a rings issue, that had a simple solution and was taken care of by the dealerships under warranty in most cases.
E888 Gen. 3 from MY 2015 and up, usually do not have oil consumption issues anymore.

1qt for 5500 miles of aggressive driving is actually amazing in a good way. You should be happy. Oil when it gets hot will vaporize a bit so there is almost no way to have zero oil usage.

These cars hold 10 quarts, so it isn't a huge percentage either.

Install one of our E2-X systems and after 1000 miles you should see consumption decrease as the rings free up again from the deposits.

Give it a try and see. Have had hundreds report a reduction or in some cases a cease in consumption.

I am relying on the life percentage on dashboard to change oil, it's supposed to account for your driving conditions , ie severe usage life would be shorter.

I heard about it but not sure I will pass emissions test with that thing, nor keep factory warranty

Cheers

Why would it not pass emissions? The PCV system is still a closed system with a catch can...

That would be wrong due to the hugely flawed PCV.

And let's not forget, oh; everything before that. 2.8 LOL, factory oil burner.

You live in Michigan? We have no emissions tests...

I highly, highly, highly doubt a dealer would void your warranty base on a properly installed catch can.

As far as your oil consumption, it sounds like you only saw consumption after doing track usage? I would just keep an eye on the oil level. I've not noticed a significant level of consumption with my car, even after track use, but your consumption is possible.

That seems a.bit high to me. My 1LE just rolled over 30,000 miles. I usually replace the oil at about 15-20% life. So far I've never had to add oil between changes, it always shows full. I don't track it, but I do have a pretty heavy foot.

...and how many miles do you usually cover between changes?
