Don't worry! Word on the street is it won't hurt your pump!

This is such an odd myth to me. I've been running external fuel pumps on race cars and boats for decades. I've never seen one that required it to be submerged. LOL. Why would a factory make a stock one that requires such? Just makes no sense.

It shouldn't be odd when you look at it. External pumps are larger and designed for that environment. In tank pumps are usually more compact because they have a cooling fluid (gasoline) to disappate the heat

thats not true. i just installed a ZL1 pump in my car a few days ago. there was 2 gallons left in the tank and it was only an inch deep the pump is about 4.5 inches tall and sits almost a 1/4 of a inch above the bottom.
iv replace plenty of burnt out pumps were the plastic was burnt brown to black.

Slow news day? 3 pages on someone running out of gas?

This is a post because someone wanted just to post.

Whats my tire pressure supposed to be?

What oil filter do I use?

I lost my key what should I do?

My house is burning down. Should I post or call the fire department?

Nah, high volume pumps I use on my boats are about the size of a D battery. They cool with the flow of fuel just like the ones in your tank. Wouldn't make sense for it to be any other way. If there was any chance of that being the case, manufacturers was never allowed tanks to run dry. You think they want to put in fuel pumps every time somebody runs a tank down to an eighth of a tank? LOL. That's not very good business sense.

What was I thinking? Of course you're right over all the engineers at various companies and thousands of hours of testing. I feel stupid right now....

Thank you everyone for setting my feeble mind straight.

imp...consider this: if you were right, every married man here would back you up as their wives all drive their vehicles to “6 miles to empty” every week.

Not going to argue. The statement was made, the engineering data from more than one source back it up.

Never once was it said that this is "a one and done" failure. Everyone seems to think it's like a fuse, overheat it for a second and it blows. And, since it doesn't happen that way, the data is wrong. Just like some people do not believe in changing oil. It works just fine with unlimited mileage. "Been doing it all my life and never had a problem"....

It's your money, time, and car. Do what you want.
