SC3R tire age: how old is too old?
I just bought a set of four Goodyear SC3R’s but foolishly did not check the date before paying for them, turns out they were made in the 18th week of 2018 which is older than the tires I was tracking with last summer.
Is there any rule of thumb or standard agreed-upon rate for how Much a tire degrades performance wise per year? Assuming of course it was maintained properly in a heated storage facility? Would there be a significant drop off a performance between an SC3R that is one year versus two years versus three years old?

I'll put money on you won't notice any performance drop and they definitely won't be dangerous. Unless the old owner stored them outside in the sun and snow haha. If they were stored properly they will be fine. Also if you got a good deal and they are a half second slower, who cares? It's still a good buy for track rubber.

I've heard the 4 year mark is when you can notice a difference. Haven't done much research on it though. Usually only last a few months for me and I've never received tires older than 2 years.

I had new 3017 fronts and 3917 rears on recently - new old stock properly stored in HVAC controlled garage. As grippy as ones from 2020. Improperly stored tires, like out in freezing cold or blazing hot garage worries me more regardless of date code.

OK good to know, thanks guys, a former racer also told me the four year mark is where he draws the line
And yes they were a slightly better deal than the price tirerack sells them for, but only about $50 a tire less

a friend of mine purchased brand new 3Rs from Tire Rack in November 2020 and they all had a 2018 DOT date on them. They will be fine.

The tire shop actually let me return them, full refund, great customer service!
I called TireRack and Nate (they are on commission) said that the stock ZL1 1LE sized SC3R's they've sent our recently have MFD of 2019 for the rears and 2020 for the fronts. I'm going to purchase from them in March/April once I'm closer to needing them and the temperature increases so they can't freeze during transport.

I used a set of the or stock 3R’s from tirerack and hated them. They were way off pace and had terrible breakaway characteristics. I’ve been through many sets of them so have a good reference point. I would be ok with a slower tire, but the handling traits weren’t worth the savings to me.

2 years of autox and 20+ heatcycles, too old. Now properly stored... maybe not as accelerated.

Just tracked with a set of slightly used four year old SC3R tires, they worked great… they were stored out of the sun and out of the cold
