Problems with the Wicked SS

I dropped the car off to get the hood painted and on the way, something really bad was happening. It felt like the car was going over speed strips. It just wasn’t right. I almost turned around and took the car home.

Well, today I got back in town and picked the car up...driving home was horrible, but it definitely didn’t feel like the problems were in the transmission or converter, but it felt more like it was an empty miss. It felt like the motor wasn’t firing when it should.

I logged the car driving home and sent to Ted. From the log he said it looked like I had a bad spark plug on the driver side.

Tonight I went through and changed the plugs, took it for a spin and still horrible. Right as I was about to call it a wrap we tried taking one more look. This time from a different angle, we saw a spark coming from the spark plug wire.

Went out and swapped the wire...bam, Wicked SS is back in business.

Lesson learned...need to get a sleeve to guard against the headers burning the wires.

Thanks to Ted Jannetty for pointing me in the right direction and to Greg (Laynlo) for taking 500 calls from me while we were troubleshooting...trying to figure out what was wrong.

Yeah. I assume so. The car had been running great for months and all of a sudden it started having a dead miss. Truthfully, based on the descriptions and discussion around the converter problem, I assumed this was the converter stutter.

After getting back to the car, it just didn’t sound right...sounded like a problem at the engine. Luckily, I had my computer with me and was able to grab some log files.

I will admit, after doing the driver side, I thought the passenger side looked too tight for a man of my minuscule skills, so I called my brother-in-law. He was the one that saw the spark. I was going to mail it in and get the car to someone with more knowledge...now all is right in the world.

The good news is, I now know what the logs look like when a spark plug is bad...which would be the same if it was a coil pack, wire or plug. I may be slow, but I am learning.

Just out of curiosity, What sticks out on the logs when you have this situation?

I’d have to go back and look to be sure, but I think in HP Tuners it was the LtB1 was going crazy...including going to Red on the logs.

I had just under a year with no problems...until I did. I ordered sleeves from Jannetty this morning.

I have a set of MSD plug wires that I've been running for quite a while and hope they continue to hold up fine without needing to ever run sleeves. I also have the headers ceramic coated in hopes that helps prevent excessive heat.

I didn't want to chance it so doing sleeves with new wires and headers jet coated at the same time. Also new plugs while I am there, curious to see what the plugs look like after almost a year.

I have ceramic coated too. I think that it doesn’t normally touch, but clearly it did. I ordered sleeves, but Ted mentioned some other wires that allow bending differently to avoid contact...I thought it was MSD.

Yeah I have to say so far they've worked out really well for me. MSD didn't seem as generous in the length of wire they give you but that actually helps keep any unnecessary slack out of the way and they get the job done.
