Maggie Phase 2 Winter Project

Jhunsberger’s winter project post inspired me to share the details of my Maggie Super Street Brawler based winter project. I’ve been gathering parts for several months and as of 12pm Sunday, my winter project is officially in work. I had a few free hours and I jacked the car, removed the hood and fascia and drained the fluids. Here, following Jhunsberger’s format, are the details of my project.
my 16 SS M6 currently sits with the following mods:

568rwhp/567tq (10-2018)
Magnusson 2300, 95mm pulley
Rotofab Dry
Pray ported stock TB
Kooks 1 7/8 headers jet hot coated with high flow cats into factory NPP exhaust
LT4 low side pump
NGK plugs
MSD wires with shields

Metco valve cover breather
AEM Xseries wideband gauge
Car was remote tuned by Ted Jannetty using SCT X4.

The mods below I will be installing over the winter, all purchased and delivered:

JMS boostapump
LT4HPFP & injectors
Skidmark garage E85 sensor kit.
Jannetty smooth idle cam kit
85mm upper pulley
GPI drop in piston/rod combo – Ted, I believe you on the stock pistons, but I’ll just sleep better going forged.
ARP main stud kit -see above
Balance rotating assy – I’m old school and it’s cheap insurance. I will be very interested in how much metal needs to be added or removed to balance.
I will be remote tuning with Ted Jannetty using HPTuners.

I am debating whether to install a catch can as part of my project; I don’t want to beat a long dead horse on this subject but would be interested in opinions on the best can & mounting solution for a Maggie equipped car.

Here’s a few pics documenting my modest progress. I will update photos as things progress.

Nice man!!! good luck with the build and progress. The cam will make a big difference for you! Pretty aggressive of you to tackle to pistons and cam, i commend you! i wont do that on my own haha.

Thanks for the encouragement! I just hope that cam is worth it, it certainly exponentially adds to the labor portion of my project and is primarily the reason I'm doing the pistons. The consensus is that pulling the motor is the way to go when swapping a cam without a lift. Seems a shame not to do the pistons since I'll already be so deep into the motor

Totally agree! I feel with a cam and boost you are pushing the limit of the pistons, rather be safe than sorry.

We pulled mine and it worked very well. Enjoy the fun of the tear down and rebuild. I did Manley pistons and rods, polished crank and cam. Just picked up my LT4 in tank pump today. Good luck on the build.

I am looking forward to the tear down and build. I'm a little concerned though, as my power adding mods are about to reach their logical conclusion – I may do a race gas tune with a smaller pulley for track use, but other than that I think I will be done. I will obviously need tires and possibly beefed up driveline components, but these are just money, they don’t really count as a project.

After I get the motor back in and tuned, I am afraid that I will get bored and start looking for another project – I really hope this does not happen as I love this car! My wife contends that I enjoy working on cars more than I enjoy driving them and I think she’s right lol!

If I had a gig like you have with Magnusson I would never get bored! I’m assuming this is a post retirement job for you? I retire around this time next year and would love to land a similar job. I’m a mechanical engineer and lifelong car guy, I would love to spend a few years doing something that I love.

On your remote tune, how do you get wideband with your sct hand held? I have one that came with the supercharger... but I already had HPT. It is still locked and I may pay for the $150 for the reset, or just sell it and for cheap. I've been waiting for HPT small plug in deal with the wideband input cable it has been coming soon for about a year.

AEM 30-0334 w/ OBD-2 support. It plugs into your OBD2 port with a piggy back on the back side of the connector to plug in a scan tool software to read the WB and the ECM at the same time. Not sure if it will work with SCT, but it works with HPT standard.

I have the HPT tuner with the breakout on the side, but it needs a laptop. I like the new HPT tuner deal that plugs in and does not need a laptop. It is not a big deal but the company got me this 4K Dell laptop and there have been many screen issues.

I'm doing a similar build. I did use the APR main studs and ARP head bolts. I will probably also go to E85, especially after I witnessed a buddy of mines Magnuson Camaro make 691 on 6.2 lbs of boost on E70. I hope to make 800 race fuel tune with 25 degrees of timing and 740 street tune on E something with 20 degrees of timing.
