"Service Rear Axle" probably shows up with most any problem that affects the engine. I had a lifter problem and that 's the code that popped up.

In hindsight I can see why it pops up. It's GM way of putting the car in "Limp" mode I suppose until it can be corrected if need be. I can see pulling timing and locking out certain things can prevent further damage.
