The heated seats in my 2014 2LT were way better than my 2016 SS. Also heated seats in parents Kia are almost too warm.

The system just monitors battery voltage and recharges when needed. Older cars always ran the alternator in a charging mode putting out anywhere from 13.5 to 15 volts or so. Turning the alternator off intermittently reduces load on the engine and improves fuel economy. That is the main reason it is done this way.
