V6 rear brakes scan tool needed?

So I'm reading the instructions on how to replace rear pads. Because we have the electric parking brake as part of the caliper, the instructions call out to attach a scan tool and issue "Rear Brake Caliper Piston Retract". And after the job is done the scan tool is used to "Calibrate the park brake".

Is this really needed? What if I don't do it?

BTW I'm planning to replace pads and rotors.

Thanks!

I ended up basically following these directions to back out the parking brake:
https://youtu.be/wAB43eO7wIs

So far so good. No warning lights or anything.

Attached are a few of my pics. Looks similar to what you see in the video.

Didn't need to use scan tool with EPB function. Yay!

Sure, no problem!

I'm a little surprised no one posted this info before, oh well.

I hope everything is fine with your car now. Maybe you have some recent photos to share here or maybe https://resume-chief.com/best-job-search-engines here?

This makes total since. I replaced my brake pads and had a real hard time pressing the rear piston back in with proper tools and I was wondering why it was being such a pain in the ass . Now I am questioning if I messed up the rear calipers doing this. The G-Loc track pads seem great, but I was expecting more and wonder if the rears are not giving me all that they have because of my stupid blunder

Anyone have experiencing doing what I did and can shed some light?

Thanks,

Possibly. IIRC, the motor basically turns a screw that pushes on the back of the piston instead of hydraulic pressure. It'd be pretty tough to get that screw to turn just from pushing on the piston, so depending on how you tried pushing on it it's possible you might have damaged something on the caliper. Tough to say without seeing it, though. As long as the park brake still works, you're not leaking brake fluid through the piston seals, and nothing is visibly deformed you're probably fine.

However, most of your track braking response is going to be dependent on the front brakes so I'd put my money on those, not the rears. Depending on which front calipers you're using, your issue might just be with the caliper itself no matter what pad you have on it. I'd also suggest getting the brake duct kit from the SS and installing that. You'll have to either tap the holes on the control arm or just force the screws in with an impact driver, but that'll help a lot with brake cooling for you since there's a decent change you're overheating the brakes with all the stock parts on the 4cyl car.
