+1

Really wishful thinking actually. A car drops about 10% off the lot, and then about 10% a year afterwards. A 4 year old car only has about 50% of it's value. A 5% drop in depreciation doesn't happen until year 7 or 8.

GM will only be selling cars during 20% off MSRP events soon enough. They have played too many pricing games and over-inflated their positions repeatedly each year.

The Mustang is back on the throne for sales and we're look at 2000-2002 for the Camaro again already. At the current trends the Challenge will overtake the Camaro in late 2017. Yes, that POS sardine can is trending to outsell the 2+2 performance champ. If that doesn't tell you GM has screwed the pooch on pricing, I don't know what does.

If you want a loaded 2SS, wait until Sep-Oct of this year. If you want a ZL1, wait until that same time next year. If you get the 20% off, and put 10% down, you're ahead on day one and will never owe more than your trade-in. And yes, the 10% off the lot & 10% of original price for years 1-5 is pretty accurate. On year 6-8, you'll see 10% of residual price. After that you've hit rock bottom as long as you maintain the vehicle.

Push it another 17 years past that and you'll start to appreciate as the number remaining in the wild go into the low thousands or hundreds (but only on the top models -- my 2013 2LT will not appreciate like a 2013 2SS or ZL1 will).

Did GM run 20% on last gens ZL1s? As someone mentioned buying a GT350 at MSRP is impossible. The R was marked up $100k at my dealer and the non-R about $20k. I'm going to be buying another car around this time next year so really interested to hear what pricing to expect on the ZL1 after the initial rush.

Buy it. Drive it. Enjoy it. Stop thinking about it.

I don't know what part of DFW you live in, but we are making a nice profit on the sale of our house. Every used car I have sold has been for a loss.

Every investment (purchasing a house) is a risk, but normally this is an appreciating asset. The purchase of a car is a depreciating asset. As soon as you drive it off the lot, you have lost money.

And just an FYI, there is a '15 ZL1 on the lot one town over from me listed for $48K with 20k miles on it. I seriously thought about it, but the new 2SS won me over.

Don't forget the 2017 ZL1 is a "FIFTY" car. Could be a collector some day...

Sounds like it holds around 55 percent of sticker after 3 years and around 10k per year?

Usually leasing depreciates around 55 percent over three years...so it costs about ten percent more?

Does that sound about right?

It's all relative. I lost $8k on my 14 Zl1. Bought new, traded in with 8000 miles. I figured, eh, not bad. I took a $30k hit on my 15 GTR. Bought new at $105k, got $75k in trade with 8000 miles.

I have a 16 Z06/7 right now. Bought new for $110k, would prob get $80k on trade so. I think the Zl1 holds value pretty damn well.

It's a car. You are going to lose money if you buy new.
