2016 SS Dependability
5th Gen owner here, 13 2SS/RS
I want to make the move to a used 6th Gen, someone has a nice low mileage 16 available, but I am always nervous about a 1st year of a major model change. So, were there any real issues anyone knows of that was present in a lot of 16s? I appreciate any help. Thanks. Jim

My 2016 2SS had no issues, bought it used from original owner at 26,000 miles and it was driven so lightly it still had the original tires with plenty of life left. I proceeded to finish what was left of them in 5000 miles of spirited driving, never had any issues. Some automatics had transmission shuddering issues, but they have mostly been fixed by now.

I had a 2016 1SS for 9600 miles.
1. A8 shudder (minor), probably would have been fixed permanently with the latest fluid change. 2. Anti lock brakes engaged under normal light braking, stop and go traffic. Shut car off and restarted. Problem solved. 3. Had NPP rattle, pulled fuse and problem went away. Theres now a permanent fix, so no need to pull the fuse. 4. Had an intermittent cylinder misfire, probably a failing fuel injector, but didn’t keep car long enough to find out. I know this sounds like a lot of issues, but the car ran awesome 99% of the time. There are TSB’s (technical service bulletins) to resolve all of these first and second year issues. |

Diff issue (has a TSB I think)
A8 shudder, (fluid fix as per TSB) Starter overheat may be exacerbated by battery not being charged regularly, for example, short drives or long periods of no driving. Read the manual about the voltage gauge. |

No issues in 26K miles even with fairly extensive mods and numerous track days. I must have gotten a good one; I'm still on the original battery and haven't experienced any starter issues even though I undoubtedly have quite a bit more engine bay heat that similar, non-modded cars.

Jim, no issues when I bought my new 2016 2SS with the M6 transmission low option Camaro. You should be fine with the 2016 but you will probably miss your 5th gen if you get rid of it. The 6gen is smaller inside but looks better with the dash layout and seats. The handling is more nimble and the car weight is lighter which is a good thing. I sometimes miss my modded 2010 2SS but that quickly goes away when I drive the ZL1. May I suggest looking for a newer 2017 or 2018 and with a M6 6 speed unless you want the A8 auto. The manual makes it more fun to drive in my opinion but some people like an Auto trans. Either one you get will be a good choice in my opinion and if you are really set on the 2016 then you will enjoy a 6gen. Good luck!

Bought mine used. Had 6,000 miles on it. I now have over 18,000. No issues other than the slow crank to start. Even with that it has started every time and only happens after a lot of stops and go (short quick trips). Oh a small other issue, I have the stick and some times (especially on cold days) the idle revs up much higher and stays there for about 30 seconds. I want to get a Solar TB to fix this.

1. Lost an oil pump which cost me a motor
2. Had to have the A8 shudder fixed 3. Ac temp sensors went out and had to be replaced 4. Slow crank due to starter location Even with all the problems I did have I like the car so much that I've decided to keep it and modded it into a completely different car. |

20K trouble free enjoyable miles. Still on the original tires, but they are getting thin now and we live in a rainy climate, so I want to swap to AS when it's time. Only performance part I have installed is the Mamo V2 PTB, which I also like.
Had the differential groan first thing on a cold AM, and I changed the fluid myself as the dealer wouldn't unless they replicated it. That required them keeping it overnight, so I declined. |
