Yes, the Z06 has a dry sump and the ZL1 has a wet sump. I am by far no expert, but my guess is the ZL1 might need the higher viscosity during cornering which will cause the oil between moving parts to flow slower and remain there longer to compensate for the fact that the oil in the pan will collect to the side of the pan and possibly briefly starve the engine. The dry sump just keeps flowing oil during cornering because it's in a separate pressurized vessel. The cost of the higher viscosity would be a slight power loss compared to 0w40 and ruining your cats?

C7 Z06 LT4 is a dry sump and the Camaro LT4 is a wet sump, although I believe they both hold the same amount of oil.
