3.91 GM Gear Kit Install Quote
GMpart 19301504 retails for $450.00, I called my local GM Service Center and got a quote of 5.5 hours shop time to install at $130.00 an hour. That's $715.00 for the install with the cost of the kit it is $1165.00. I don't mind paying for quality work I just don't want to be taken advantage of, does this quote sound reasonable for those who have had this gear kit installed,?

That sounds right.
5-8 hours install. If you're unable to do install yourself, the dealer gives you a few mile warranty on it, 12000 iirc. So that's a plus. You'll love these gears!

5 hours sounds good, 8 hours sounds really long.

I was going to ask this question myself. Doing the swap myself is beyond my skill level so I got a quote from the dealership. Your quote is better than mine. I was quoted about $1230 after taxes.

I was told install time was 1 or 2 hrs. They seem to have cores ready to install with the Eaton true trac. Does this sound good?

$715.00 is a good price, my dealer quoted me $1200.00. I paid $750.00 for my install with a reflash of the computer for the gear change.

Take it to RPM Motorsports in Garner, NC. They do outstanding work, and will quote you a much better price! They did mine and even re-calibrated the speedo for free.

if you want to keep your GM warranty thats not a bad price. If you will be tuned. I bought all the GM parts myself and took the rear end to a gear shop. I have less then $700 into it and a 1 year warranty. labor was like $350. If you're just doing gears all you need is the gear set, a pinion bearing and pinion seal. if you want you could do carrier bearings and axle seals. Havent heard of anyone needing shims and if you do they are cheap and your installer will already have them for next to nothing as they are the same as a 8.8 ford and another common diff.

I did my 3.91 install with a qualified mechanic. Took about 5 hours and the hardest part was crushing the new crush bearing.
The install came out great and the car takes off like a rocket now (It's a V6 with an automatic). $750 labor doesn't sound bad at all. |
