Can someone try a test for me ? LS3 MN6
Hi:
I have a 2011 (10,700 miles) SS RSS MN6 LS3. I am hearing a "clunk" not too loud when I come off the floor with the clutch. I assume I am hearing the clutch engage, I just want to know if it is normal. I hear this when: 1. I am in the garage (no street noise). 2. Car is running. 3. Shift is in neutral , foot on the brake. 4. Press the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. 5. Bring the clutch up. 6. I hear a clunk noise as the clutch is about a third off the floor. 7. If you pump the clutch up and down it is more easily heard. If I turn the motor off and repeat the test I hear nothing. Anyone else hear this noise? Thank you, Bob Greatly appreciate if someone could try this test for me. |

I'd say you are hearing the non-moving clutch disk engaging a moving flywheel.
On my V6 I hear nothing in that scenario. |

Thanks for replies ..
- maybe it is an LS3 thing. - the car is not moving so I am not shifting (as you mentioned shifting into second)..motor is running , car is stationary, shifter is in neutral and it's when in that state I pump the clutch up and down I can hear a "clunk". |

My 2011 LS3 has never made that noise under any ocndition. I advise taking it into the dealership and having it looked at.

Throwout bearing? Master cylinder? Clutch disc? All of these things make minor noises.

I say it's normal trans noise for a manual. You got a lot of parts that have to engage other parts in order to get the car to move. Mine doesn't really make much noise when I engage or disengage the clutch but I know some of my other cars that were manuals would make noise.

My 2011 LS3/MN6 makes the same sound. It depends on how fast I release the clutch though. I barely hear it if I release the clutch slowly.
This has never really bothered me because it has made the sound since the car was new. The clutch feel and performance has not degraded since new too. I think it's simply the clutch disc making full contact with the flywheel and the sound is the from the sudden engagement of both parts.

i don't think that's normal, but hard to tell given that this is a forum.

He's talking about pushing the clutch in and out when in NEUTRAL. Doesn't sound normal to me.

It's still moving parts contacting non-moving parts. Mine only makes the noise if you release the clutch quickly and its not really that loud at all. Honestly I've driven other cars and they were louder. I'm not too concerned about it.

I surfed the web and looked at all the posts here and I think you are both right on the money. The flywheel is spinning and the clutch plate is mating up to it. I tried your test and when I release the clutch out ever so slowly, no noise to a real faint noise. But pumping the clutch up and down , there is an obviuos noise. I hate taking the car to the dealership unless I have to, so this information has been great. Thank you all !! Bob |

Mines made clank/mechanical noise (1st, 2nd, or neutral at 10 mph) since the day I got it. Unrefined, however I accepted it long ago. It's a muscle car, not an M3. I turned over 38,000 miles last week.

That's a normal condition. When you engage the clutch, the transmission internals begin spinning after being at a dead stop. The natural clearances between the gears meshing together suddenly tighten up, and you get a brief clunk from it.
If you listen carefully when idling in neutral with no foot on the clutch pedal, you can hear a little clattering coming from the transmission. It's called, "gear roll-over" noise, and caused by the pulses of the engine firings working against those clearances also. Hammer down and enjoy.
