Question on 6x9 adapter 82-3017

Hey all, I’m installing 6x9s into a SS 1LE. They’re going into the empty slots on the rear deck but I have a mount/adapter question. The 82-3017 was provided but I’d like to verify how they are placed on/in the holes. Do you flip it over with the side edge facing up? Or put 1/2 above and 1/2 below or just cut the hole and make it bigger (not going to do that, I’ll cut the adapter first)
