Looking ahead
I see so many folks adding headers and catless exhaust systems, it makes me wonder if there are no emissions tests in your states of residence. Certainly we have them in Texas, so if a new car, you will be facing that 2 years after purchase. Are these cars running so clean that they can pass without cats? On top of that, many are doing cams that would most likely contribute to a dirty system even further. Thoughts????

In NC a new car is exempt on the emissions piece until after the 3rd year. Even at that most counties don't actually analyze the exhaust. They are just looking to see if the ECM has passed all of its emissions related tests. You can have one fail and still pass.

In NY, the "emissions" test is no more complicated than plugging the car into a computer to check for any CELs, specifically emissions-related CELs. If there are none = Pass! There is no "sniffer" test. |

Oklahoma did away with vehicle inspections years ago. You should see some of the piles of crap with wheels still somehow driving down the road. I'm ok with it until pieces of cars start falling off at me on the highway Technically the police can still enforce compliance on exhaust, but I've not seen any that do it. The last time I was stopped in my old F-Body, the trooper and I talked headers and exhaust setups for a good 10 minutes.

AFAIK, they still do sniffer tests in Texas, although we have a couple of new cars, so not sure if that has changed recently. Anyway, if you delete cats, wouldn't that trigger a CEL?

Then you tune out the CEL. Here in Commiefornia there are mandatory smog tests every two years with sniffers. But that's not a big deal, as long as you make fast friends with a smog shop of your choice... Luckily tho, in CA you get the first 6 years of owning your new car to befriend a smog shop before being required to get checked.

Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson metro areas only) is similar to what many of you have mentioned. If your OBDII you just roll up and they check for codes, no tailpipe molesting. They also check the gas cap. Total test is like 5 min and $20. I always wondered if their equipment can tell if the car has had CEL tuned off for off-road exhaust/Long-tubes etc. When I get my Camaro I'll look into it more I guess.

Came from NJ , where I was born and raised. As a musclecar guy I was fortunate that a Cousin worked at the Inspection Station. I would show up at closing time, he would slap on a new sticker and I was GTG for another year. They were crazy strict on emissions, brakes, and NOISE.
Moved to Montana when I was in my 20's and was astounded by the absolute JUNK on the roads. Saw vehicles with one or no frt fenders, no hood, one or two functioning lights, etc. Needless to say, Montana had and still has, NO inspection of any kind. Thought the State Troopers DO cite and occasionally remove from the road, the REALLY dangerous vehicles. |

No inspections in South Carolina. Supposedly they never sought to do such a thing because none of the school buses would pass...
I don't think Florida has inspections, either. Coming from the UK where that stuff is SUPER strict, I love the whole "if it has a title you can drive it" idea. Although I do wish that people wouldn't wait until they have a blowout to change their tyres... :/ |

In many counties of Maryland, the only inspection a car has to go through is when it is being tagged through the DMV. Meaning once you buy the car, you have it inspected (most dealerships do this before the sale) and then you never have to get it inspected again. However, law enforcement can issue you a repair order in which you may have to get the car inspected within 14 days of when the order was written.

I am pretty sure no matter how clean the car runs it is a federal fine if you remove cats. Law could have changed but that was how it used to be.
