Looks like i will have to bring it in to see what the story is but it seems to me like what has been talked about here :( Also mine was built before 2016 so no clue if its isolated to cars before a certain build date.

That's your differential

Wanting to say 11/15 on the build. It started like a brake drag on initial turn in the morning. As of this morning it's like metal on metal for 7 or 8 turns that was around 8 miles or so. Didn't pay much attention until a few months ago it's either in worse shape or the cold really effects or more.

When the weather got a little cooler around 1500 miles I got the groan. Any turning groaned until the gear oil warmed up. I swapped out the gear oil for Valvoline full synthetic LS gear oil. I had very dark oil with a lot of flakes and the magnetic plugs were holding a lot. I ran this way for a week and the groan got worse. Then I put in the ACDelco gear oil 88862624 and the groan cleared up.

So that's at least 3 months production. I find it hard to believe they would have been using contaminated fluid for 3 months. I think we all know by now contaminated fluid wasn't the problem. I'm patiently waiting for a recall. In the mean time I'm a little concerned taking any road trips in the car.

I saw this thread and read everything here, called the dealer last week and mentioned it. He took some notes, and was going to check into it. I was surprised today when they called and wanted me to bring it in so they can change the rearend fluid. I'll update everyone on the results in a few days. Thanks to everyone for their contribution.

I think I'll try the figure 8 break-in method and report back back with good or bad results.
The dealer performed the fluid change. I did about 25 figure 8s yesterday - the break-in procedure I saw in this thread. I'm still hearing the noise, but it is not as severe. The car goes into winter storage soon - I may need to wait until spring to followup with the dealership.

I think that there will be a recall too, don't think new fluid is the answer, hence why I am also patiently waiting before bringing my car into the dealer, isn't worth the aggrivation, hate bringing my cars in at all.

I kinda feel you on that one. I have a passengers recline seat broke from months ago and i hesitate to bring it and now the noise from the diff is just sounding worse so i have no choice really Ahhhh the dreaded dealers! One of the problems bringing it into the dealer is unless you drop the car off the night before and they drive it cold from the start they will not hear this diff noise. So i would think it would be a 2 day ordeal no matter what unless you are in the middle of nowhere with a non busy service department...

Yeah if mine gets worse I will bring it in, but such a PITA to bring to the dealer, hassle...and then trying to get them to understand the issues, understand how picky I am with my car, then getting the car back dirty with hands prints all over it. Then have to sometimes argue about getting a loaner when it is left for a while, so yeah I try to avoid them like the plague, lol!

My diff was recently changed and chatter is back within one month, so even changing the diff doesn't fix the problem it seems. The temps were warmer when I picked it up, but I hear it leaving my house from a heated garage for the past two weeks. Car shows 59 degrees when I start it and that's not very cold.

I want to do some performance mods, but not looking for gm to use that as an excuse for their problem.
